Description
Since the latest Star Trek movie came out, I've been noticing what to me is a new phenomenon. They're called "Meme's" and the they seem to be chain letters done in the form of comic strips. Normally I actively ignore such things, but in this case, they mostly asked for illustrations comparing old and new Star Trek. For the most part these strips fixated on improbable character romances which hold little interest to me since in a story where giant flying skyscrapers regularly duke it out for control of a quarter of the galaxy, if find it hard to care who has a crush on whom.
I did find one section of a meme (What a bizarre little word.) that did catch my interest however. It asked to depict the meeting between an original series character and their reboot counterpart.
For obvious reasons, I chose Uhura.

I very much support this. Uhura was never meant to be on America's Next Top Model, she was meant to be a lean, mean, baby-makin' machine! Curves and maternal senses ftw!

You didn't make Fake Uhura (aka Saldana) annorexically bone-thin enough. Modern movie women are meant to make other women annorexic, and that's certainly the example that Fake Uhura sets.
Whereas Real Uhura set a better example for women and African-Americans everywhere.

Eh, I tried, but I couldn't bring myself to go with the full-on bulimic look. I figure she's skinny enough here to get the message across.

Eh, I guess the point gets across, but it's more breast-focused rather than showing the differences in their bodies.
Either way, great job with the art, man - the coloring is fantastic. Hopefully someday I'll be good as you are!

I definitely love the Nichelle Uhura. She's got the curves in all the right places! Zoe is hot but is a bit too supermodel skinny. Baby needs back.

Aw, you wound me with your mocking of Zoe Saldana
Why can't we appreciate both?

We can. I just appreciate one a little more.

I never would have expected this, lol just kidding.
Although I would have expected a moire nomaid style picture but hey this is good
I like the way you've done this, although I'd have thought the reboot Uhura was slightly curvier, showing the differences between their figures (Zoe SaldaΓ±a definitely has a thinner figure then Nichelle Nichols) but in a way that's fairly flattering to both of them.
Nice job

Yea, it was sort or weird drawing Uhura without filling in the bounds and gag later. I guess I'll have to address that at some point.
Actually, this is sort of a response to some meme's I've seen that cast Saldana in a better light because she has a more modern hairstyle, and a longer skirt. I almost want to slap these folks and shout "Have you actually looked at these women!!!"
But that's just me.

I've looked at them and Nichols' Uhura is light years beyond Saldana's. Curves! Regal bearing! Made it onto the Enterprise because of her competence, not because of her p-whipping Spock.
What a woman!

I didn't read that scene at all. Spock was more worried about being caught or raising suspicions about their relationship. At the time, the Farragut probably seemed like a good idea. Uhura just reminded him in no uncertain terms of her qualifications as a linguist and a top student at the Academy. She earned her place aboard the Enterprise. Spock only chose to Farragut to avoid the appearance of favoritism. At least in this movie Uhura got to show a little bit of her competence as an officer in translating and intercepting the Klingon transmission and being fluent in several dialects of Romulan.
I thing TOS Uhura was foxier, but both played competent and skilled communications officers who deserved their spot on the bridge.

I concede your point regarding Spock's decision regarding the Farragut. However, we HEAR people talk about how competent Uhura is, she TALKS about intercepting and translating the Klingon transmission but we never actually SEE her do her job. Everyone else got to do cool things about their jobs (and even some things that weren't their jobs - like Chekhov and the transporter) but we never saw Uhura strut her linguistic stuff. That really bothered me.
I agree that both Uhura's were competent officers. I just would have loved to see New Uhura at work.

True. I hope Uhura sees more action in the next film.

Exactly. I fear that in making Uhura into "Spock's girlfriend", they may unintentionally diminish her character. Rather than having any relation to the plot at large, she could well end up sequestered to the tacked on romance story.
*While the rest of the crew fights to stop the Planet Killer from carving out the heart of the Federation, Uhura bugs Spock because he's never said "I love you."*
That'll work.

I'm sure it was odd to draw her unbound, especially when you drew two versions of her
LOL aha I see. I haven't seen her portrayal of Uhura yet, have just inherited the DVD of the film so I'll have a look soon.
That said I must ask - how is it better that she wears a longer skirt?

Like I said, my meme is a response to wrong thinking.
Longer skirts are never better unless they go all the way and become tight hobble skirts.

Interesting. While exaggerated, I can very easily understand the perspective as well. The new girl is a twig with no real curves. Plus, you gotta admit, Uhura has that "sexy 70's vibe" thing going on, even in the later movies.

Or is this, how a bot from FMP would see the two: Nichelle Nichols in all her sexiness and Zoe Saldana in, well, the way she is?

we-r-nomad In reply to hippo2 [2010-02-12 00:41:50 +0000 UTC]
Nah, bot's are greedy. They'd definitely snag both.
It's just me. I do like Saldana fine. She did a great job as Uhura, and I wouldn't kick her out of bed for eatin' crackers. But if I have to make a comparison between the two Uhura's..."There can be only one!"

If you prefer the TOS Uhura over the new one, I totally understand that. I'd prefer her too (although the new movie really rocks!)
