Description Since the latest Star Trek movie came out, I've been noticing what to me is a new phenomenon. They're called "Meme's" and the they seem to be chain letters done in the form of comic strips. Normally I actively ignore such things, but in this case, they mostly asked for illustrations comparing old and new Star Trek.

For the most part these strips fixated on improbable character romances which hold little interest to me since in a story where giant flying skyscrapers regularly duke it out for control of a quarter of the galaxy, if find it hard to care who has a crush on whom.

I did find one section of a meme (What a bizarre little word.) that did catch my interest however. It asked to depict the meeting between an original series character and their reboot counterpart.

For obvious reasons, I chose Uhura.

Yes! That's exactly how I see it! Nichelle's Uhura is The Woman. Saldana's Uhura isn't, with her stick figure and inappropriate behaviour.

This is great! Yes, Zoe is way skinnier than Nichelle but I like to justify it that Zoe is playing her younger and women develop more curves as they get older. Amazing job anyway.

I love this - I couldn't stand the new Uhura, she didn't seem to bear any resemblance to the original whatsoever. And your statement in the artist comments made me laugh: "For the most part these strips fixated on improbable character romances which hold little interest to me since in a story where giant flying skyscrapers regularly duke it out for control of a quarter of the galaxy, if find it hard to care who has a crush on whom." I agree with you 100% on this, I watch Star Trek because I love watching epic space battles or weird aliens doing crazy stuff, if I wanted to watch people flirting with each other or whatever, I would watch Big Brother instead. XD

The drawing is really good, I love how you have made the original Uhura realistic, but stylistic at the same time. The shading style looks really funky. And reboot Uhura... the way you drew her makes me laugh, and somehow you've done her in a different style completely, but matched the shading so that it all fits together. It looks fabulous! Very nice work

I'mma have to go with TOS version Uhura. (Even though she didn't even have a /first name/ at that point in time. Of course, neither did Sulu.)

You can never beat Nichelle! She's a beautiful, classy lady, as is Lt. Uhura, as opposed to Saldana's version of the character.

If you're still fuzzy as to the nature of a "meme," think in terms of examples. The "Rick Roll" is a meme. The "All Your Base" phenomenon was a meme. LOLcats are a meme. It's simply an idea that catches on and is repeated.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

we-r-nomad In reply to JoeEngland [2010-03-21 19:40:25 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. Actually, I was still "clear-as-mud" on the definition. So I guess a meme is a low-intensity fad?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JoeEngland In reply to we-r-nomad [2010-03-21 23:53:54 +0000 UTC]

It can be merely a fad, and on the Internet that's usually what it is, but it can also be much more lasting and significant.
Douglas Adams' "42" could be thought of as a meme. Bart Simpson's "Eat my shorts" as well. The Seventies ingrained in our psyche the yellow Smiley Face and its accompanying slogan, "Have a Nice Day." Ancient chestnuts like the "rule of thumb," "the golden rule," or playground antics like the "Sitting in a Tree" song are memes of sorts. And even hand gestures like the "hanging myself" move, the finger/gun motion and (of course) the "bird" are all memes which are now so prevalent as to remain lasting residents of our physical lexicon.
In short, a meme is simply a bit of culture which is repeated in one form or another. It can be a practice, a superstition, a saying, a tune, or almost anything you can think of. And if it's successful enough, it can become a permanent twitch in the social consciousness of humanity.

we-r-nomad In reply to JoeEngland [2010-03-22 02:45:02 +0000 UTC]

So it's a shorter way of saying "cultural phenomenon".

That actually clears things up for me. Thanks.

Plus, if going by any of the books, Uhura apparently became Chief of Starfleet Intelligence.... Such a fine catch for the FMP. ^_^

Was it just me, or did the Reboot shipboard uniforms seem kind of out of place compared to the Academy cadet uniforms, and were jarring compared to the pre-"NERO SMASH!" uniforms?
