"Dont go," she pleaded softly, clinging to his neck.
"But you know I must. We cannot be together," he replied, sitting back on his hind legs and lifting her up into his arms. she curled up against him and grabbed onto her chest, burying her face against his scaly stomach.
"But I love you," She sniffled.
"I know, child, I know," he said, wiping away one of her tears with his claw. "But it could never work. Besides, what would you want with a grizzled old dragon like me?" He asked with a smile. She couldn't help but laugh through her tears.
"But why?" She asked after wiping her eyes.
"You know why my child. It is for the very same reason that I should not have let this happen in the first place." He gently set her down on the floor of the cave, and she stood on shaky legs.
"Will I ever see you again?" She asked, unable to look him in the face.
"Perhaps, child, if the gods wish it. And if not in this life, then the next. Where we can live without fear or having to hide. Where we can fly together through the stars," He said, lowering his head, which was easily as tall as she was, to right next to her. She tried to wrap her arms around it, but only got halfway around. She smiled sadly, feeling the warm gusts of air as he inhaled and exhaled through his nose. She kissed him on the brow between his eyes.
"Could I at least have one last ride?"
He smiled, and pulled his head away. "Yes. Of course. One last ride."
