Description
Pic taken of me last summer while at a larp - it shows my latest addition to my LARP arsenal beutifully:my double axe - Mk.2 (see my gallery for the earlier version)
it works like a...
- spear
- halberd
- axe (duh)
- quarterstaff
- poleaxe
- glaive
i have defeated seasoned LARPers armed with bucklers and one-hand spears with this - and trust me, that is no easy feat.
this is, IMO, one of the ultimate weapons ever devised and I would not want to let go if it for the world.
also, behold - me in the my Mk.2 armor (with black lacquer so it is EPICLY sweet and awesome)

Thank you
Though I have made a Mk 3 since this thing:Β webkilla.deviantart.com/art/LAβ¦

The armor was made in late 2006 - I was 20, didn't have any help or formal training in making it - and the only armor I'd made up to that point was this from 2004:Β webkilla.deviantart.com/art/LAβ¦
so I'd consider it a serious upgrade to the Mk1 chestplate.
Heck, laquered black, with suede-on all the plate edges so it doesn't rattle or make any noise what so ever (You can sneak up on people wearing this)
Besides, in my latest use of it, it seems incredibly fitting:Β webkilla.deviantart.com/art/LAβ¦

It's just an opinion, I'd say the "Axe" is dam near top notch 'Professional' where as even with the newer picture webkilla.deviantart.com/art/LA⦠I'm still not a fan (Black on black...on black, none of the details stand out. don't get me wrong, its nicely constructed... its just all black makes it look basic 'it's my opinion that it takes away from the construction quality'
These aren't AMAZING examples but I hope they help get my point across:
nathanstoddard.deviantart.com/β¦
the different material types and variance in colors help to make more details stand out 'of course you don't want too many colours and textures, that can be too busy'
nathanstoddard.deviantart.com/β¦
of course it's all opinion and I'm not trying to put you down or offend you
nathanstoddard.deviantart.com/β¦
This one is a good example of almost too dark but still not bad. 'I'd say there are almost too many shiny details (like the rivets and rings and such) but still overall not bad"

Ah - now I see what you mean
So, here's a few things to consider:
my armor is 2 millimetre steel plates. The stuff you link is leather.
Sure, in my second picture (me as ork) I'm also wearing leather greaves - but my points stands.
See, I have leather armor: webkilla.deviantart.com/art/LAβ¦
However, if its to work as armor it has to do a few things - like actually cushion the blows I get. The above linked leather armor, while it looks very nice (bought it used from the guy who made it) does NOT do that - but it looks nice.
My steel plate armor on the other hand actually protects me. This is kinda important since when I go up against another 20-something bloke with a latex battlehammer or huge broadsword who thinks "Oh this guy is adult like me, that means I don't have to hold back!" or 20 12-yr olds with regular swords who look at me and think "Oh this is an adult AND an ork, so we can beat on him really hard because that'll kill him faster"
So as armor - then my plate is by far the best armor.
You're talking purely aesthetic values - and in that sense my armor is very simple, if nothing else.
Plus, Β while I do love working in leather (its easier than plate...) then when it comes to detail-work I would never try to make that kind of indentation-art. Would take far too long.
I prefer using a soldering iron instead:
Before:Β i120.photobucket.com/albums/o1β¦
After:Β i120.photobucket.com/albums/o1β¦ (plus a few other leather thingies I've made)
...I use the goggles both so I don't always have to put ork-makeup around my eyes, plus in summer during pollen season I wouldn't be able to LARP witthout eye-wear due to itchy eyeballs
Of course, those gauntlets were done up in a more orkish style - so its not as 'pretty' as all that elven crap you've linked
See, elves is what you wail on with that axe of mine - not what you try to look at
Mind you, when LARPing I don't actually wear armor anymore... because its usually a lot easier to just run away if outnumbered instead of getting swarmed (which would hurt without armor) - and being able to run after, and catch with, lightly armored elvish pricks who look like what you linked, is hilarious and quite pleasing

lol, going by your response 'I don't think you understood what I was saying :]' I probably should have said 'The costume'? not 'Armor' (I don't know what you LARP guys call your stuff, we in the SCA call it Garb)
here are some good examples of what I'm talking about 'just for you in orc armor'
nathanstoddard.deviantart.com/β¦
thoro.deviantart.com/art/New-Mβ¦
bloodworxsander.deviantart.comβ¦
and if you think getting beat on with a soft weapon is rough, try going to an SCA fighter practice XD we use 'sticks'
and just to wrap up :] you made the outfit set and its basically all black and smooth "All I'm saying is I think It would look better if= next time try using a color palate of like 3 or 4 colors and a few different contrasting&Complementing textures.
oh and steel is cool, but it is a heaver material to use "I like using Boiled leather 'but it can get pricy' same for Aluminum, also Plastic 'Rain' barrels rock! they are light and rigid/ durable.
Good luck with future costumes and have fun!

the first pic you linked is very... grey/brown - I think that looks kinda bland
I prefer a little more color
also, this is how I usually look as ork without armor:Β i120.photobucket.com/albums/o1β¦
Β - a bit more color and texture
and here's 30 seconds later with a pancake:Β i120.photobucket.com/albums/o1β¦

I just realized my comment "of course you don't want too many colours and textures, that can be too busy" fallowed by the next link might seem like I'm giving that as an example of something that's "too busy"
I didn't mean it that way.
lenoragewandungen.deviantart.cβ¦
I just meant it as another good example of 'layering' colours and textures.

It's mostly the color. Black, army leather boots would fit better imo if you don't think about getting especially tailored boots for larp. And they are comfortable too.

ya - but i would only have access to second hand army booties - and they're not necesarily that comfy when troden in already

Great costume, you could use different boots though.

if i used 'roper' in-game style boots then... well... my feet would be pwned.
i wear those boots because they work - not because they look pretty

you've obviously never seen danish LARP before... try to search youtube for "danish LARP" n stuff - will blow your minds
also, think more along the line of "LARP costume that really works"
that stuff is real steel plating. Danish LARPers dont mess around... (and incidentally, i've seen danish LARP weapons dent steel armor...fun times)

The design is rather simple, yet effective. It reminds my alot of a Dwarven Urgrosh.
