I imagine that Etheru appreciates having a intellectually-hard grindstone to wring her brain against, but I also imagine she looks up to him as a means to improve herself. If he disappeared from the picture, I'd imagine she'd be quite stricken over it.

She surely appreciates the challenges from Yzei!
Etheru is very smart as well, however she's more the kind to follow her instinct and to act first, while Yzei is more of a strategist and mastermind. That's the big difference between them.

Seems like a good combination if paired together, but even standing alone they offer advantages/disadvantages in their character. In my opinion that's a good sign of balanced character development.
