Description
I am a scientist;Pinning down ideas
like butterflies
preserving them in
their fragile beauty
as I take away their freedom,
their life.
I am a parasite;
sucking the soul out
of music and leaving it
a hollow shell
that plays like
the noisy silence in
my ears.
I am a thief;
taking what is not mine,
the world around me,
and pouring it into
a mould that
I claim is
my own.
I am a blasphemer;
playing God in a
sacred place, changing
the world to my
liking when the orchestra
is not under my
conduction.
I am a liar;
selling false havens
to lonely runaways,
giving them a glimpse
of a world more glamorous,
more fantastic than their own,
smiling as I snatch it
from under their noses
while they thank me
for my crime.
I am a slave;
hanging in a
leeching relationship
with the language I choose,
caving to its rules
when I draw in
smears of its
blood.
I am a writer β
these are my vices.

Whoa... holy crap, that title definitely didn't lie. You're pretty good at this shit. Definitely a writer. Congratulations on being the first favorite on my new profile!

There were parts of the poem that didn't move me, but these sections were inspired. Very unique and great vision in those lines.

Beautiful play on words. Β To me this is a rumbling boil of descriptive alter egos ... all simmered down into the soul of a writer. Β Love it!

I was going to comment on how that second stanza is just gold, but the whole thing it that way!! ^^ I love this because it is pure truth. Amazing.

I would call the first one a collector, not a scientist. Interesting ideas otherwise.

I'm inclined to agree, if it were just about the actual act of pinning butterflies, but it's the implication of the reckless greed for knowledge rather than the compulsion to hoard rare things that made me chose that word at the time. In any case, this was a piece that I wrote a very long time ago and I wouldn't frame it that way now. Thank you!

I don't agree that science in and of itself is reckless, but I do get not editing an old piece.

Of course not! That's not what I meant. But the act of pinning a butterfly, to preserve and study and understand it (science), is effectively ending it's life, which is kind of beside the point of preserving and studying and understanding it in the long run. Honestly, I didn't think the metaphor was such a stretch at the time and I still don't. This poem is old - it's whiny and dramatic and it lacks smooth imagery and technical grace, which is why it was formerly in my scraps, but it's very straightforward.

I think the science comes in at the understanding, which wasn't to me the focus of that passage (and especially in modern times, the idea is to obtain a live specimen because we have better technology and understanding now). Frankly it's troubling to see science grouped in with a bunch of descriptors that are generally considered negative. But as I said, I get not modifying an old piece. I am fine with agreeing to disagree.

Let us do that
(And my apologies, I just re-read my comment and it was rather rude. It must have been late, I don't know what possessed me to write that...)

Hmmm. I don't really think I'd revisit an idea which was a bit careless about lumping certain occupations together, and I don't think it'd work too well. But writing about writing? Always
