I love the detail on the dinosaur, especially the legs. What species is it? I love ALL the theropods, especially Deinonychus (I probably spelled that wrong) and Microraptor. So awesome!!!

awww, cute little bird predecessor! Or is that one of the ones that actually has nothing to do with modern birds, like archaeopteryx?

Weird-Duck In reply to Flameshadow117 [2008-04-11 13:32:43 +0000 UTC]
I think archaeopteryx was part of the line that evolved into birds, and larger dromaeosaurs like this deinonychus here were part of a different branch..related, but not direct predecessors to modern birds.

oohhhh dromaeosaurs are in the therapod group! you've got it backwards-- The current theory is that Archaeopteryx was part of an evolutionary dead-end and that birds actually evolved from Therapods... I just didn't realize dromaeosaurs were therapods....(Thank you wikipedia )
Awesome, now I know what dromeaosaurs are! My favorite dinosaur ever is a dromaeosaur, Microraptor gui. Anything with 4 wings that actually existed is pretty cool in my books

Ah..I hadn't heard of that theory until now. I'm just not that big of a paleonerd, I guess.

You're not? But you have so many dinosaur pictures! =O
Ah well, thats really the only thing I know about dinosaurs and birds... other than Jurassic Park, from which I learned that velociraptors are *not* giant turkeys, and can pick locks and smell fear from 3 miles away. >_>

Well, I am a paleonerd, just not a big enough one to be keeping up with new theories until they're fairly well known. Or maybe that is fairly well known now and I'm just out of touch. I dunno.

Hmm, well, I guess I haven't been on the birding scene very long, so I'm not sure about changes in the Archaeopteryx theory, but my little ornithology handout says about the origin of birds,
"1868- Thomas Huxley: Dinosaurs
1926- Gerhard Heilmann: Thecodonts
1973- John Ostrom: Therapod dinosaurs"
So... the therapod theory has been around for awhile. Unless Archaeopteryx *is* a therapod.... in which case, I have no idea when they decided that Archaeopteryx probably wasn't a predecessor to modern birds...

No, I'm going to be majoring in graphic design. I've thought about it though.
And thanks.

Ah yes, the lonesome call of the lone dromey.
Such is what happens when we grow up and have "adult" responsibilities.
Unless you're like a few of the couples we have around here who can share their therianthropy. Bry and Mel, Min and Asazi, Ferahgo and Aggie, Echrei and... well, whoever he is with now, I imagine. Jeez, with those kinds of stats running around here, you'd think it'd be difficult to push the rarity of such an event actually happening. *shrugs* I'll shut up now.

Well, I wasn't trying to suggest this is a rare event...the picture is very personal and a means of expressing certain emotions.

This reminds me of the Walking With Dinosaurs episode with ornithochirus (spelled very badly wrong). His instincts tell him to keep calling for a mate. That could possibly be the case here.

Wow, that's really pretty. Good job. Her colors go quite well with a night scene like that.
The noise lines kind of make it look like she's barking. It's cute though. :3

Would it have looked better with, say, steam from her breath showing?
And thanks.

EWilloughby In reply to Weird-Duck [2007-11-14 15:46:51 +0000 UTC]
Hm... steam would actually have looked rather nice. It would have conveyed the idea of her making a noise as well as something about the environment - that it was chilly. Like I said, though, the noise lines make it oddly cute.
