Description One thing I find charming about roe deer is their courtship behavior, which involves forming what are called 'roe rings'--circular or figure eight shaped patches of trampled earth around trees or rocks or other such objects which are created as the male pursues the female. I'm kind of surprised this behavior hasn't been illustrated more on DA, particularly in the Divine Cervine group. I find it pretty cute and endearing, anyway.

Not sure if I'm entirely satisfied with the background the way it is, but I've run out of ideas to refine it further. If anyone has advice/constructive critiques on that, please don't hesitate to offer them!

Edit: Added some better shading on the flowers and worked the tree on the right a bit more. Thanks to for the critique!

Nice work. By the way, roes make this during their rut.

I've never heard of that behavior before: it is really cute and endearing! I love how you've illustrated the deer in this picture. The background is pretty good too, but the flowers look pretty flat to me: I think they could use more shading. The grass and the trees look really good, too, although I think the tree on the upper right hand corner could use some shading as well.

Haha, I kinda forgot that tree behind the hawthorne (well the flowering tree is supposed to be a hawthorne anyway) fussing over the detail everywhere else. Thanks for pointing that out, I'll try using a richer pink to shade the roses too.

you're welcome. That should work.

By the way...I saw this on the bottom of the screen about the same time I looked at your comment, and I thought it was funny because it reminded me of that cartoon you drew a long time ago. XD Only this one is happy:

Wow. Half of me goes 'eew', the other half goes 'aww'. Kudos to them for both the gross sense of humor and the unusual medium used to convey it.

I know, right? Organs always squick me out. XD But yeah, it was creative that's for sure. XD

I wonder how it is possible I never came across any mention about this mating behaviour before. Even if roe deer is most common relatively big wild mammal in my country's forests and fields. After seeing your adorable work I sat and searched more carefully and found some information but as far as I know we seem not to have our own Polish term for your 'roe rings'

I'm under the impression this is something that is seldom seen, so it isn't entirely surprising it isn't more well known. I'd never heard about it either until I read a book about roe deer.

I like how it has a sort of story book-ish quality to it while at the same time depicting a real and somewhat enigmatic roe deer behavior.

Thank you, I was going for a slightly whimsical quality without sacrificing too much realism.
