"Holt, is something the matter?" His mother sat beside him, following his gaze to the horizon. A knot formed in her stomach, she knew it was coming to this, but she didn't want to accept it...

"You know I can't stay," Holt sighed, lowering his head. "There's no pleasing him, he expects too much of me"

His mother leaned her head upon his shoulder, a frown forming on her lips. "I know he can be harsh, but he only wants what's best for you, for everyone."

A growl rumbled in his chest, "Well perhaps what's best for me is to leave, it seems the only way to escape the torment. Who knows, maybe he'll even miss me," he spat the last words like poison on his tongue.

A deep, calming breath was taken. "I'm sorry it's come to this, but I'll return some day, I swear it."

His mother lowered her head in defeat, there was no convincing him to stay, even she had seldom seen any signs of affection from her mate in the many moons they'd been together. She only hoped that he would one day allow their only son to return...
