Description
This is the prize for the first place in ShadeofShinon contest! Here you can see Velink wonderful and creative contest entry, I also recomend to take look at her gallery-if you enjoy
my creative ideas around Pokemon, you'll enjoy her nuzlocke!
www.deviantart.com/art/Shadeof…
She wished me to draw her Sawsbuck from the nuzlocke, I tried to follow his apperance in my style and do as much as I can
I haven't studied deer anatomy yet, but I'm glad she asked for THIS Pokemon- it's beautiful, simply and neat in design
as well as being one of grass types that shows the elegance and power of nature.
Yeah, flower power!
I was glad even more to draw this, because she wanted him to be shown as wandering through the forest, so it gave me another step forward into drawing backgrounds, each little step, each drawing makes me improve
I hope you like it, I am not satisfied how it turned out :/ if I would go cartoonist or cell-shading(that's common but I totally dunno how to do it), it would be definitely better,
but I need to train shading like this, I just go with my realistic style.
Her sawsbuck has some extras, personal feathures: little beard and curled hair on its back; I interpretated the hair as longer mane
that's curled. It's Pokemon, I am not like Arvalis to make Pokemon super realistic. Might that's why my drawings are not such stunning
and mesmerazing, but oh well It's just my fun art.
Yes, IT IS A GREEN HAT. At first when I saw him I thought he has big leaf, but then I looked close...
Let fabulous Pokemon be fashionable~
commentary about artwork
I was supposed to draw simple background- I prefered to offer my skills safety, since I am not good with the backgrounds yet, or at last I don't feel I am.
I can enjoy doing background and I know it is as important as the first plan or exposed thing in the drawing.
I decided to use some of my intuition and knowledge for composition- even if it's peacefuland calm scene, I gave some dynamic with the perspective that Velink has suggested and I fitted the background with this, going with incline look and straight, high trees. I was had in mind common forest that has a lot of trees, but they're thin and have leaves really high, the whole tree has a lot of "naked" branches.
I know my drawing of curled hair is a fail- but I don't run away from something hard for me.
Also, yes, I ignore the beautiful fur/hair brushes- why I should use something that makes life easier if i want to relax by drawing each
single hair?! I just love to do it, i also can better understand how the fur/hair goes through the body.
Albeit the shading was done with fur brush.

Ty so much, I am glad long work over sketch was totally worth.
Do you mean trees overall or only the leaves part?

I made a speedpaint over their trunks, the shading and lighting was done on separate layer with basic soft brush;
the leaves were done with a brush I downloaded somewhere on DA (I once downloaded A LOT of them, so it would take me some time to find who exactly and which set it was I'm sorry to say this)-it was the same as this used to make those bushes- and then after increasing some contrast I erased to make gaps with sparkle/shine brush also made by someone here.
I know I don't sound so professional, but if you really want to test those brushes, I can spend some time to find them.

Don't worry it was more the technique I was interested in as opposed to the brushes. I really liked you lighting through the canopy.

So in nutshell, I just painted the leaves and then erased with a brush that added also the light around these gaps.
Oh, I've forgotten to mention I painted a bit different color in the background there to strenghten the effect

This is a really beautiful piece. I love the angle and the composition and also the simple coloure palette. The green and red/orange complement each other nicely and the amount of both colours seems to be in nice balance. The leaves in the forest trees are done very nicely. There is something about the foreground that might have required a bit more work but I can't quite put my finger on it. In a way it seems a bit unfinished but that's not because of the simplified fallen leaves.
Anyway, those curls on Sawsbuck's neck are cute.
Oh, and one more thing. While reading your commentary I couldn't help but notice this one sentence and I feel like I need to say something about it: "--I am not like Arvalis to make Pokemon super realistic. Might that's why my drawings are not such stunning and mesmerazing--"
First of all, I hope you don't think that (super) realistic style or drawings are ultimately better than for example cartoony ones. And by this I don't mean that you're not allowed to prefer realistic over cartoony. What I mean is that "super realistic" doesn't automatically mean the picture is better than the ones drawn in other styles.
Secondly, yes, it's Pokemon, they don't have to be super realistic if you don't want them to. But even if you don't make them super realistic that doesn't mean they are, in some way, worse than the most realistic ones.
If you've been inspired to make super realistic drawings go for it! Comparing yourself to others hardly does any good. All that matters is that you enjoy what you do. Focus on this: "It's just my fun art."
Anyway, thank you so much doing all the pictures. You did great job with all of them. The winners definitely deserved it. :>

Thank you very much for your comment and critique.
I was unsure about the color choice, since it was a little experiment for me.
As for the background, it's maybe just that I used to go with a way "better symbolic background than no background"
Since I don't have such passion to it, I go with a speedpaint and I guess it can be easily seen
As for your two cents to my description: I find cartoony style even better than realism, because it clearly shows the pure style of an artist and since it's something free, it has much of the "live: in it. I'm sorry I cannot gets my thoughts right, especially in english.
I just found that people choose or clearly super-realistic Pokemons or clearly cartoon/manga styilised ones. Rarely someone favs something between which I feel like being in. Yes I am analyzing such things, because as aiming to be an artist that will sell work, I want to find balance between my pleasure and my customer's one. I compare myself only to my artist-idols to be inspired. Seeing how for example you have great success and create wonderful story AND non-Pokemon art, I feel more optimisting and have stronger hope to ot give up with my fanart.
It was all my pleasure to draw prizes for contest winners. I thank you!

Fair enough. Although you did seem to have patience with the leaves in the trees and the grass so the blotchy foreground doesn't quite fit together, even with the speedpainting explanation. It alright though, I sometimes get fed up with a picture after some time and just want to get it done. I usually take a break and finish it a little later, it usually works out better that way than rushing it to the end.
I kinda disagree with you about what you said about style and cartoony styles showing the pure style because each artist as an individual has their own style. Perhaps more simplified things can show things such as line style etc. better and cartoony works tend to look much cleaner so it might be easier to notice certain things.
When I draw I don't think about my style. I do feel like I can handle a few different styles thanks to practise but cartoony style has never felt natural to me at all. If I try to do more cartoony works it is not my style and it feels forced. Style is something that develops over time, some people find more cartoony styles more comfortable whereas I find semi-realism more like my forte. It's what comes from me naturally. It is my style. And what comes out of me naturally is my pure style. You can try to develop your style into a more cartoony one and adjust to it if you want but as for me I've always felt like the way I'm on now is the right way to go.
But what I think about style is that you shouldn't worry about it too much. Focusing on drawing itself is more important, the style will pretty much form itself over time. You can of course take a moment to check if you're going in the direction you want and fix that if need be.
I think the drift between cartoony/super realistic Pokemon and "something between" is that cartoony Pokemon is what people are used to see so it's approachable whereas super realistic style offers a huge contrast to what people are used to see. It kinda makes people go like "whoa, this Pokemon might actually look like this if it existed/this looks like a creature that I might run into when I go out". That "something between" doesn't necessarily offer as much contrast as super realism but it may show more of the artist's personal style than the two others and may be more personalized than cartoony or super-realistic-almost-real styles.
Stylized things are often more popular because people seem to like simple things and cute things. Not that all people dislike realistic Pokemon but some people can be quite vocal about their opinions on the matter. It's not always just because of the style but also the drawn subject that matters in the style question.
As for popularity, I don't know if dA favs are a good measuring factor. Favs are free and they don't always mean people would pay for what they see but it does mean they do like it. Sure they can give you an idea but I think a better way to figure out what kind of work sells is actually what kind of artists the companies etc. hire and what kind of art people pay for. On dA it's hard to get known, sometimes it's all about sheer luck. I might be that those who'd enjoy your work probably haven't found you yet. So, it's probably not best to judge what's popular by analyzing what kind of pieces get favs but rather see what kind of work people pay for. Remember to be critical about that, too. A lot of the success might also depend on if you've made a name to spread out there, whether people know you. It's reputation. There's a lot more to selling art than just your style but I don't deny its importance by any means.
Like I said, it's hard to get known on dA. I know that, I've been there. I started from a scratch with a crap comic that got better because it taught me many things, that somehow gained more followers than I ever even dared to dream. It's taken me three and half years to get here so it definitely hasn't happened in an instant. As satisfied as I am with the current situation stopping here would be dumb. There's only way from here and that is forward.
Anyway, glad you enjoyed doing the prizes!

No i śliczne kolory. ^^
