...or SEMI-realistic, if you want- I know face expression is something I could not do, but I couldn't resist -w-'

Maybe it's another distraction, but since I saw Dartix design...IT REALLY BOTHERS ME on many levels.

A weird eye when it's opened (one, not both, a shock face is fine by me~), the gesture straight from cartoony bird characters,

EVEN THE WAY ITS WING IS USED AS A HAND. Mind you, I never seen an owl with such....narrow edged feathers in wings,
which also bother me, because it's something I see naturally in other birds of prey.

There's also a DETAIL that bothers me in Dartrix- the upper white beak looks like big flat nose and down part like  big swollen lips
- brain, you're craazyyy to see this...!

I'm not trying to say I don't like this design, I love how 7th gen Pokemon have sooo much personality and thought
behind the design- it really touches my imagination, I love it, but Dartrix...stretch your wings as wings from time
to time, okay dude?

Cool.
- - -
How I see Dartrix, a.k.a Poor stressed burb:

- for some knowledge about the owls, it belongs to Tytonidae family

- the green "hair" are feathers which evolved in convergent evolution similar way to Grovyle and Sceptile;
their structure is made of different proteins than other feathers, they contain some chlorophyll inside,
but unlike mentioned reptiles, Dartrix's green feathers have less plant cells and are easy to bend.
Still, if you could touch them, their surface reminds more of a leaf than feathers

Those feathers are also naturally partially waterproof- however, for better shine, Dartrix covers them with
special oils it produces from its wings- at their middle stage, when preparing to become mature sexually,
their bodies produce oils that imitate smell of flora they live in

- short wings are perfect for swift changes in direction when flying- maybe whole Rowlett family are bad long-distance
fliers, but they're very agile and can dodge almost every attack in flight.

- Dartrix are believed by most of people to have feather-fingers or muscles in their 5 long feathers,
while none of those are true- in fact, research done on grass types and Dartrix have shown that hormones and nervous system "communication"
developed into whole new level for grass type Pokemon. Dartrix can manipulate the flow of hormones inside biggest quills of its wings
to bend them inside or outside.

- it's said very often that in evolution only "the strongest will survive", while for many bird Pokemno it's actually "the most beautiful will survive".
Dartrix, same as Oricorio evolved more towards beauty than adaptation to natural environment, which is why it's one of endangered species.

- Dartrix have real problem when it comes to battle, unfortunately many people misunderstand this and put between jokes;
it's not the matter of "snobbiness" or caring about apperance in excessive way
- IT'S PROVEN TO COME OUT FROM PHYSIOLOGY OF THOSE BIRDS.

Dartrix's body is preparing to evolve into one of the most unique and specialized sniper-like hunters of the Pokemon World
with highly bendable feather quills,so at the middle stage their bodies go under huge change and the body produces lots of hormones
which affect its behaviour, so it's really hard for those Pokemon to stay calm all the time.
They sometimes even go through self-hatred stage of life because of how much hormones
overcome their mind and can change their mood. Even a small stress can grow into huge problem in matter of seconds, so they
retreat in panic of what's going on inside them rather than because they don't look perfectly in the middle of battle.
A Dartrix might look calm on the outside, but inside their minds and under feather coat they go through battlefield
of own thoughts and feelings.

Some act in a way most of people call "birdbrain", doing even nonsense things under the stress- many conflicting
impulses cause them to look for any activity or occupation to relieve the stress- so don't call a Dartrix a dork
when it made a mess and started to clean its feathers standing next to what it has done- it simply couldn't find
any solution that knew would work withouth making things worse- it might lack self-confidence or suffer from anxiety,
so decided to not touch anything at all.

Some Dartrix DO make things worse, because under the stress their mind is bombed with running thoughts
which burdens nervous system.

In natural habitat, those Pokemon survival depends on being able to stay perfectly calm, still and camouflage in a perfect
spot to sleep during daytime- that's why battling and messing up with the feathers seems totally againist their natural instinct!

(Weirda Mirrart's note if she could speak those poke-science fact to anyone)

W: Just look at its face...that heart shape and white color means something- nature says us it's a Pidove of peace among owls...
it's brutal to joke around how "picky" they are when it comes to battling and hunting- they just do in wild and it only proves how various each species role
is to not conflict with each other, but master their niche in this World.
We might could do miracles if at last try to understand the variety and work over them rather laugh or kill what's so different.

PS: >sob< yeah, that's what I wanted....drawing and writing this made Dartrix grow on me a lot

that explanation for the finger-wings is interesting. definitely makes sense as a plausible explanation for other birds with finger-wings, like Lugia.

and I'd definitely see the whole burdened mind thing to be a problem for anything.

Thank you! Maybe I still feel I need to dig into articles about plants "communication" and hormones, but I'm glad no one got confused there with this part of description ^^

You're right, is Lugia wings could be 100% bird-like- but I would explain it then as it has such mastery of its psychic powers, so it can controll them even feather by feather

but the feathers would have to be kinda durable to be used as fingers, though, right~?

well, either way, the explanations are pretty good~ and hey, a Lugia would probably use telekinesis or its tail for heavy lifting, right?

A friend! I must confess, the wings in Dartrix's design did bother me as well; they just seemed stunted. I love the sort of 'folded' look you gave them here, he looks so happy ^^

I won't lie, even while drawing this, I just wanted this Dartrix and hug it softly, such a cinnamon roll I understand with its problems....!
-w-' I even think it could be my pokesona.....n'aww, nvm, I wouldn't expect I'll warm up to Dartrix that much in a single day haha :'D

I'm glad I'm not the only one when it comes to Dartrix wings.

many owls with closed eyes look so comfortable and happy aaa~
Game Freak you made a neat job on this owl Pokemon, kudos to you x3

Weirda-s-M-art In reply to ComanderSprings [2016-11-04 07:48:16 +0000 UTC]

thank you so much~!

Yes, if we talk about how I see them in my Pokemon Universe- they ARE hunters, they hunt on their own, but only at certain time and they hardly fight for territory in wild- they avoid battles.
Even their eyes hardly open in the battle- their bodies and instincts say all "no" when it comes to battle, especially regularly as it happens when raised by a trainer.

ComanderSprings In reply to Weirda-s-M-art [2016-11-04 15:55:13 +0000 UTC]

So they are more of paficists despite being hunters, I see :3

Weirda-s-M-art In reply to ComanderSprings [2016-11-04 15:59:25 +0000 UTC]

yes as strange as it might sound, they're like a pet cat- they rest and chill a loot through day, hide in places to be unseen, doesn't bring conflict liek dogs with barking

First, I recommedn you to look at wing tutorials-in fact some really helped me to understand how to sketch them

then just....sketch a lot- your hand must draw them delicately, to make them look soft. Only practice will make you learn how to do it.
Plus, I love drawing details sicne I remember- so for example this old drawing made me practice A LOT drawing feathers:

weirdamirrart.deviantart.com/a…

so don't get in self-critic, just try, try, try untill you will feel you got it- then only patience and....gooooo draw fluffy predators of the prehistoric World~!
- - -
y-yeah? if you could see me drawing them, or even look carefully now at finished drawing, you can see the outline is pretty messy at some parts and I mainly used shading to mark feathers rather than draw them one-by-one.
However, I'm glad that I left the sketch a bit messy and not re-drawn whole outline- this gave them more natural look at the end with shading

thanks though to be honest i should have mentioned i need to learn them for drawing a T.Rex as their feathers were more like downy feathers instead of the amazing looking flight feathers

THAT ARCHEOPS LOOKS GREAT

I SHALL stay determined and practice

that shading ting actually suits feathers more since they would blend in with each other
thanks for the advice

You're welcome!

I think you should not be afraid and ask me for tips and advices, even come to my streams, so I could show you something- this also helps me to rememebr basics or keep practising ^^

and really, it's not all about the talent. Talent tells us which path to choose, but like artists need to practise and hone their drawing skills, we must keep on making little steps forward.
To stay and think a little about what to do or what to correct is good, but not when done too often.
So keep on practising, find the joy of making drawings

I also started from somewhere and you see me drawing (so practising) a lot.

i should really learn how streaming works but due to my constant stream of home works i don't think i can watch much sorry
though i should learn how to watch on in case i do end up with free time

i do find joy in drawing in fact i have had quiet a lot of fun with my latest posts on my deviant art page (sorry if that seemed like a shameless advert there)

good point again thanks for the advice

You have never seen an artist streaming? I hope at least you have seen artist announcing streaming.
You know there are videos about speedpaint of painting process of a digital drawing(sometimes traditional).
Streaming is when you can see it live and talk with an artist on the chat ^^

It's slower, yes, but because it's a real time progress.

Don;t worry, it's not an advert in any kind! If you could ask me for looking at your gallery just because I opened for talk to you, then yes, it could be imposing.
But I won;t mind if you could post a link t your gallery if we could talk about stuff you do (for example) it's natural to do so, to share something personal ^^

i have seen announcements but they are either on twitch which takes a long time to load on my laptop or i have flat out missed the steam (or i was busy with homework)
oh i have seen speed painting before in fact i watch a guy do freakishly good dinosaurs through speed paint videos

that makes sense art is a process which takes time and thought into it

i don't really do much work here but if you are curious of what i have done then you can just click on my profile and it should send you straight to my page and it should show all 5 things i've done here, that is if you are curious is all

I know the thing about missing streams- that's why I also decided to stream myself only on weekends and try stay up late, because many ppl have morning when I'm in the middle of streaming from timezones difference D:

I'll try to look up in free time, I don't wanna end up making a promise I couldn't keep
