When I was little I bought 2 baby turtles.
Back then they only cost 5$ a piece. Now they cost 40$ (around here atleast).
They grew to big for there tank eventually and my Mom wouldn't let me get a bigger tank, so she sold them.
I miss those little guys

I was about to say how it's illegal to buy baby turtles but I see you're in Canada, I'm guessing they don't have the same laws as the US... I'm glad prices are up, people need to be discouraged from buying baby turtles honestly... your experience fits into my observations that a huge percentage of the time they get abandoned once they reach 6" or so, because people can't care for a HUGE turtle that needs a small swimming pool to live in.
I worked at a pet store and people would bring us adult red eared sliders almost every week. We had a big fake pond in the store for them, and nobody wanted to buy them (some were up to a foot long). But they were all fawning over the baby turtles (also abandoned by irresponsible pet owners, and NOT FOR SALE). Sigh.
This little guy, I caught in my pond.

Its not illegal in Canada, but you rarely find them in stores now anyways.
I was all for the pond, but I live beside a major road and my parents thought it a bad idea. I had red eared sliders as well.
I miss those turtles. I used to take them out a few times a week to the backyard so they could run around in the grass. They were really really fast! One time we lost one of them for an entire night and found him in the bushes the next morning

my boyfriend jus' loves turtles. between the both of us, we have way too many. this time of year they are constantly out on the highway. He's a truck driver so he see's tons of them and stops along his routes to place them back near the river or off the sides of the road. Except for now he's been dragging them home with him because he's afraid they are still gonna get hit by cars and wants to move them to little ponds away from tracfic. Yesterday on the way back home, we spotted two turtles on the high way, we saved one but the other was hit by a car before we could reach it.
My home in keokuk, the bathroom is filled with reptiles. Three babies we've had for over a year and two large turtles from off side the highways plus my python.

How awesome that you two save turtles! I help turtles away from the road whenever I see them... once my friend and I persuaded a HUGE snapping turtle (about a foot and a half long) to move away from the shoulder of the road, it took us nearly half an hour.
I occaisionally keep painted turtles that I catch in my pond for short amounts of time, but they're high maintenance. I prefer my snakes.

I simply love this photo. The shot of the turtle in your hand is great, it tells us how small the litte guy/girl really is. Also, it adds a nice dynamic for the shot - this is a nature shot as well as showing us that he isn't just a wild turtle, he has human interaction, maybe he's even a pet. This photo also captures his coloring and texture really well, and the description of how he is "air swimming" is adorable. And, I must say, your nails are great - nicely manicured, cuticles all taken care of, the works. Overall, I'd say you rock.

Wow, cool! I have a stream near my house, but the coolest thing I've ever found is a water bug.
And congrats on stopping the nail biting! I don't bite my nails, but picking at them isn't much better. I'll stop...eventually... XD

Aah, sorry I didn't respond sooner! I've had a ton of exams taking up my time! Thank you, if you can stop cold turkey, then it means it can be done!

It really looks like a variety from the extreme south of Brazil... so our species don't have the red line and dots i guess.

Well, I live in NY and caught the little guy in my pond, sometimes the babies have more striking patterns.
