Well, it hasn't technically happened in the tumblr universe yet, and it will probably be quite some time before it is.
Basically, he got the scars fighting a creature known as the miasma(i a concept for the creature in my head, but it has yet to be put down on paper) under normal circumstances, he would have gotten the scars removed with magic, as he feels that scars are a reminder of his mistakes; however, he got the wounds in his final battle with the miasma, choosing to keep them as in this case, they were a reminder of his greatest success.
