Description
Made this for a school project early 2009 ( I think).Theme was "light" and you were supposed to weld something that worked with the theme.
I made a lantern, based on the paper lanterns I made at school as a kid.
It's made from squares (and some triangle half squares), bent to a 72 degree angle and welded together at the corners.
Simple and easy. I thought of polishing it, but then decided I liked it as it was.
About 50 cm in diameter.

That rainbow pattern comes from the heat of the welding. in order to weld the metal you have to nearly melt it, and when it reaches a certain temperature, steel is annealed into colours. You can use this to create effects but sadly it is only on the surface and won't last very long.
I decided to keep it because it looked pretty.

We only had "You were here - yay!" or "Hm, perhaps you should try actually doing the project at the next assignment." since it was more of an arts school than a technical education.
I got the grade "Holy fuck, you're fast!"

Sounds like a school I would have enjoyed.
Plus, also, too, besides.. I'd say you might have gotten a pretty good education there.

It was brilliant.
You got to learn the basic techniques in a very creative and encouraging environment. There was no "wrong" and you were urged to take what you learned and turn the knowledge into a part of your own expression. Absolutely wonderful!
