Description Darkness.

Pain.

James was lost on a black, stormy sea that swirled and roared around him. The raging waves of shadows seemed to be determined to suck him down into the depths of oblivion.

Thoughts and images flashed like lighting overhead. The smell of blood and cordite. The thunder of gunfire. The feel of flesh and bone being pounded beneath his fists. The rush of the wind. The feeling of speed. The image of a hand clad in a white glove smeared with blood punching numbers into a small keypad. Falling.

Time was now just an abstract concept. He had no idea how long he had been spun and tossed by the dark tide. It could have been days or mere moments. There was no way of knowing.

And then suddenly. . . .

. . . . there was a voice. Feminine and soft and so very familiar.

"Jamie! Time to wake up sleepy-head."

The voice called forth memories that calmed the dark tide. Picnics in the park. Piano lessons. Bedtime stories. Warmth and happiness. Unconditional love.

"But I'm so tired, Mom", James murmured. "And I don't have school today. Can't I sleep in?"

The sound of his mother's sweet, musical laughter brought a smile to his face.

"Fiddlesticks, young man", came the voice again. "You have slept long enough. You've got a very busy day ahead of you, Jamie. There are lots of things to do and you won't get them done lying there Mr Lazybones."

In the distance. On the dark horizon. A spark of light flickered to life.

"Ok, ok", breathed James. "I'm gettin' up, Mom. See? What are we going to do today? Are we going to the museum? Or the art gallery? I've forgotten."

"Actually, you're going on a big adventure, Jamie. It's going to be very exciting."

His mother's voice was cheerful but nevertheless her words made James slightly uneasy.

"Just me?", he whispered. "Aren't you coming too, Mom?"

"I'm sorry, sweetie-pie. Mommy can't come with you this time. But don't be afraid. You won't be alone. You have a lot of new friends waiting for you."

"Am I going to summer-camp?", he asked in a puzzled voice.

His mother's laughter rang out again and soothed James' apprehension.

"Not exactly, kiddo. But it's the same in some ways. There are going to be a lot of things to learn and so many wonderful people to meet."

The spark in the distance had grown into a crack of light that spanned the horizon. James looked into the bright glow. He instinctively knew that that was where his mother wanted him to go. He knew that she spoke the truth. That on the other side of the light there was a great adventure waiting for him. But somehow he also knew that there was going to be pain as well. He hesitated.

"I don't know, Mom", he murmured. "Can't I stay here with you?"

"It's not your time yet, Jamie. You can do this. Be brave. And just remember that I'm always right there with you. No matter how far apart we are. And that I love you so much."

A gentle breeze that felt like the touch of soft lips brushed across his forehead.

"I love you too, Mom", he whispered.

"Now you run along, kiddo. One of those new friends I was talking about is waiting. He's starting to wonder if you are going to show up at all."

James ran toward the bright glow and called out to his mother.

"I'll be brave, Mom! You'll see! I'll make you proud!"

"You always have", said his mother as the light engulfed him.
