Guide to Endless Depth.had to change the name for the title length
many people wonder why i don't draw backgrounds much. well, theres 3 reasons.
1. client did not order it,
2, i am lazy.
3. i am lazy.

Backgrounds are the bane of my existence as well. I must admit, I generally just throw together something vague, completely lacking detail or objects of any sort. The background's no fun to work on, its the characters that are the focus!
Don't feel bad, I'm lazy too. And not nearly as skillful as yourself.

Impressive stuff, I love the cloak, both the colouring and design of it. The detail is great, in particular the seams of the cloak, a small touch but a nice one none the less
The sword looks rather deadly, and for that matter so do those talons hanging off the cloak. The whole motif of the picture is dark, yet exotic with the inclusion of the feathers and bones which imply voodoo.

I feel you on that, backgrounds sometimes take longer than the actual character. So I try to avoid them as much as possible.
I like all the little details, mostly the folds in the cloak though. Very smooth and detailed, you did a wonderful job, as always. ^__^

Who cares about backgrounds when you have a subject like that? Here can be a new excuse for not doing backgrounds. My subjects are so highly detailed, with shadows and highlights and the oh so perfect coloring that any background I did would simply be invisible against the subject.
That can be your excuse.

Theres so much detail in the actual illustration that you don't need a background! 'Sides, we don't want anything that takes away from the actual image, anyway...

Really cool character design^^
As for the background thing, it doesn't bother me. But you could always do quick textured-type backgrounds. There are sites like Obsidian Dawn that let you download high-quality brushes, and they're all free for commercial use.
