Iβve moved to Zootopia, hello Iβm foreign exchange from CanewtdaI decided that I'd be a newt in the Zootopia universe! (A newt who dreams of being a dragon)
"But reptiles/amphibians/birds aren't in Zootopia!" you cry,
Yes, I know! But I wanted to explore that maybe, JUST MAYBE, we only saw a sliver of that animal world.

Scarecrow Force is temporarly in Zootopia, they are SWAT team from another city and have an eagle, a vulture, a penguin, a chameleon and a croc among their ranks!
I loved the movie, the best Disney has ever doine... and of course was saddened by the lack of resptiles and birds... your puc is simply fabulous: lighting, action, dynamics... just hope this li'l guy isn't trampled by accident!

I just love this idea! Since we didn't see ANY other animals besides mammels I have a feeling that other animals are intelligent too and just live elsewhere. I wonder if there is actually some kind of segregation....like there may be bird or reptile countries out there. Kind of like you've depicted here, they just live somewhere else.

Was I the only one who was bothered by the facts that there were only mammals in Zootopia?
It seems a tad bit unbelievable that the movie is selling "its a world with nothing but animals!" and not have reptiles/birds/amphibians.
And that cynical part of me thinks they did this just so they could make a sequel.

Actually the directors said in an interview that supposedly there were reptiles, amphibians etc. But they are not shown in this movie because the pred vs prey was easier between mammals. They also don't show monkeys because they don't want any connection with the human race. The only non sentient creatures are bugs (and possibly fish), that's what the Preds eat. Very cool movie and I hope we can explore the universe more

Besides: Β even if it's canon that there are only mammals in the world of Zootopia, there's no reason you can't create a non-canon character! That's what being a furry is, in a large part, all about: Β creativity!

I personally tend to think that what we saw in the film is just a very small part of a much bigger world. When you think about it, the movie itself gives us an explaination to this lack of animal diversity. Zootopia takes place in a world filles with fantastic racism. "If the various mammalian species are prejudiced against each other, then of course an average mammal wouldn't want to walk the same streets a bird or lizard step on", as I read somewhere else. The issue may be adressed in a future sequel, or a series. I wouldn't mind a series taking place in a such rich and colorful world.

Looking at the plot I can imagine that it was for story simplicity; it's very easy to separate mammals into carnivores and herbivores. Reptiles and birds, however, cover the whole spectrum. There are some lizards that only eat plants, and some that only eat meats, while some are omnivorous. Same with birds. It isn't to say that mammals don't have this diversity, I just think that audiences are more likely to recognize the whole predator/prey theme without the confusion of adding in reptiles and birds.Β
