They're spying on Dave and John.
Back when I made this I had the idea that Karkat was super into John and in a jealous tizzy over how close Dave and John were. So he got it in his head to spy on the two (to the point of getting on not-his-bus ----and this crosses over into the HS Medium School idea I liked to entertain at the time---) to see whether or not they were in sweet homosexuals together. Terezi, amused at his antics, tagged along to harass him and get more whiffs of dat coolkid aroma.

At first the Word of God (Hussie) was "Hey you guys are drawing him with orange hair. That's cool."
Then it was "Orange doesn't make a whole lot of sense, he's probably going to be blonde if we're picking colors."

Absolutely. Red haired people are cool, and his thing was fire, so it fit pretty well. But you know, it's not like it matters too much with his characterization or portrayal. In fact, him being blonde seems a bit ironic for various reasons. But yeah, I fully expect people to keep coming up with color schemes that they like. ^^
