Description
Just moments ago at the Edmonds Marina I got great looks at a Spotted Ratfish close to the surface. These guys are a species of chimaera, a close relative of sharks and rays and they resemble something like a cross between the two. We are very fortunate here in Puget Sound to see these animals regularly and close to shore since in most parts of the world chimaeras only inhabit very deep waters. These photos were taken with my iPhone with a Lifeproof case, submerged just beneath the surface as the ratfish swam by.
