Happy October! This year I'm participating in Inktober. I'll be using the original 2017 Inktober prompts by Jake Parker (I did not discover the 2018 prompts until today oops) and all of the pieces I do will feature Southern Resident Killer Whales in an effort to bring further awareness to their plight and prompt action to save them.

"Swift" features K20 Spock and her brother K25 Scoter porpoising. To move quickly, orcas will propel their bodies partly (or sometimes completely) out of the water. This reduces drag from the water on their bodies and allows them to breathe at the surface while moving at speeds of up to 30 mile per hour! This makes them one of the world's fastest marine mammals. Southern Resident Killer whales will use this ability to swiftly travel between preferred hunting areas and catch up to family members in the distance.

This piece is dedicated to K25 Scoter, who has been looking thin and lethargic in recent sightings. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
