Description
Geez, uploading this to Scraps because I've already uploaded one too many facial shading things, I know. This was a copy of an exercise sheet I passed around to students in my latest character illustration class. The face drawings are mine - the students copied the basic planes onto the large face then shaded the six smaller identical ones in different ways.
I referenced the basic planes of the face off of one of Andrew Loomis's books, Drawing the Head and Hands.

I remember favouriting this on another account I had way back when. I'm glad I found it again.
Hopefully this will help; I find shading the face the most challenging aspect of any painting or drawing.
Many thanks.

This is such a great reference! I'm in a level 200 drawing and we're doing self portraits, with planar analysis. This has really helped it all to click. Thank you

Oh wait this doesn't have 1.7 bajillion comments? Then I guess you wouldn't mind one more.
I've always enjoyed your references and tutorials. Thank you for taking the time to make them and help fellow artists develop their skills.
And because of timing: Hope you have Happy Holidays!
