There can not be a functional contrast under an insufficient lightening (or using a wrong film speed). For example, "Sunburned" is an excellent portrait, without any contrast. By the way, my critique is about technical matters, not the beauty, which is undeniabe.

I don't think the skin looks plastic. What I see is the white of the cloth causing a lightening of the contrast. I think you're beautiful.
