The oleander flower is a toxic flower. I think Nathan has been surrounded by people and expectations as poisoning as this flower. Of course, the environment he existed in seemed to have affected his mind so much but eventually ended up killing him. Despite his condemning nature, there was really not many people there to morally guide or help him.
