Both, really. Not sure how you did the model so it's accurate to the anime shape, but I'm assuming that the material is just a shadeless diffuse texture right?

and then for rendering, i set all the lighting so that it hits directly where the character is facing (in mmd, it's when x and y are 0 and z can be any value above 0). that gives it the anime lighting where the shadows fall around the character's lines.

uhh i just mess around with the vertices for a long time until it looks right !! like... a lot of patience is needed and the textures are the most important part for getting that "anime style" perfect
