*pulls away gem-patterned curtain to reveal Wilson's next transformation: the draconic pushmi-pullyu*Actually, this is just a color test (#5, others in scraps if you're curious) that got totally out of hand, ehehe.
But... (for readers of my fanfiction, which these dragon(s?) are from, ) does anyone else ever think about where that gem actually came from?

Hehehe, thank you! Definitely the intended impression--Wilson might think he's pretty scary, but my 'real' dragons would find him to be a little goofy looking/cutesy... almost more human looking, perhaps, by comparison.

Okay uhhh spoilers (?????) ahead?????
I think about dragon lore a lot, bc um i like to, and also I've put a ton of work (with Little Result) into a pretty dragon-centric Original Project. So, I definitely ripped stuff from that for the fic -w- I'm weak. In my 'universe', dragon magic is wired to work optimally when 'shared'; it diminishes when stagnant. So dragons are considered 'the travelers' among magic users, because they're most content by nature when mingling with other magic/staying in motion. Thus, a lot of their intrinsic abilities are related: manipulation of time/space/realities (teleportation), intuitive abilities to learn languages/blend into other societies (shapeshifting,,,, kinda), some kind of weird... communal sharing of energy type thing....... etc. (Wilson isn't a 'real' dragon and can't do most of this stuff)
However, [insert long sad history, blah blah] there aren't a lot left, so 'sharing' magic with other dragons is increasingly difficult. A lot of those remaining are getting desperate and finding weird, somewhat less natural ways to hand off magic/preserve their legacy--and outside parties are eager to try to get in on it, take advantage.
The consequences of which is like the plotline of everything I write, ever,,,
But anyway, one such (particularly shady) practice involves the consumption of a still-magically-energized/only Mostly Dead dragon's heart... which is crystalline. (Ever heard those, like, old fashioned high fantasy stories where dragon's blood/etc etc had incredible magical/medicinal properties? Yes).
So essentially, The Predecessor Dragon (red eyes spooky boi) sensed the magic of The Constant, kind of hoped it was another dragon, 'hacked' in, and instantaneously short-circuited and exploded for breaking Their magic rules. Leaving generally decomposable/unnoticeable fragments, but what magic remained seeks magic to share, and iT JUST SO HAPPENED A CERTAIN MAN FOUND A HEART SHARD BIG ENOUGH TO PICK UP AND
There are reasons I badmouth this work of fanfiction and they are numerous

I think I remember Dragon Rider! Isn't that the one with silver dragons who feed on moonlight, breathe fire that reveals truth instead of burning, and most of them are turned to stone? A charming and good read, I'm flattered by the comparison! Perhaps there are some similarities, ehehe. I don't think I've read Inkheart :0 I should!
I take a lot of dragons/magic inspiration from Chris d'Lacey's The Last Dragon Chronicles and The Erth Dragons, I highly recommend both! :>
