Alas, that shall never be… This is actually a rather late submission for the Let’s Draw Merlin project over at tumblr! I chose to depict the scene when Tulio is preparing to leave Miguel (who has decided to remain a “god” in the city of gold) so I could parallel the peasant/royal relationship between Merlin and Arthur! Rushed a bit, so might do some touching up in the future… Well, probably not, lol. Hope you guys enjoy it as it is! ^^

I love the warm light in this. Do you paint things in gray first and add colour later or do you paint in colour from the start?

Thank you, dear! Yep, I did everything in grayscale before overlaying some layers of colour. This isn't my usual process, though... I'll just do this with my more realistic portraits if I want something more monochromatic, or if I don't have a lot of time to spend (which was the case with this piece, lol). Painting in colour is important to practice, I think, and I do prefer the outcome of my portraits that were coloured from the start! Though I find it much more challenging than painting in grayscale...

Aha! I've never really understood how that approach works. I've tried it with my latest pic of Thorin O, but I ended up painting over it in colour cause I didn't like the look of it
