Once Cody had become suitably adjusted to the flat racing saddle, it had been decided he was ready to move onto what he would wear racing in a few years time, once they'd advanced him onto the hurdles. The plan, though Nat was sure that with her luck something would happen to get in the way of it, was to run Cody through bumper races on the flat through the first two or three years of his career, and then hopefully have him running hurdles and eventually the steeplechase by the time he was seven or eight, and reaching the prime of his life. She was definitely terrified, she mused whilst scissoring the final section of Cody's mane, reaching her left arm over to the box of little elastic bands currently balanced just behind her stallion's withers. She'd only recently decided she even wanted to sign him up for more than flat racing, but really felt that he was destined for more than just a flat career.
The tack resting on the fence beside her was strangely daunting. It looked so different from anything she'd ever ridden in before - luckily, today she would only be practising, letting Cody adjust to the breastcollar he would have to wear, and seeing if he would be comfortable in the brand new figure-eight bridle she'd bought yesterday. Natalie really hoped he would be, as she was so sure he could make a great racehorse if they could make him comfortable enough to run happily. In the four races he had been out to so far, Natalie had only been able to watch from the sidelines as another jockey rode her horse, and she could see how unsettled Cody was by it. Hopefully, in a few weeks, she would be able to ride him at the novice National Hunt meets. If only he could be ready by then.
On the more positive side of her thoughts, at least there was more consideration for presentation, she decided. Nat had spent a careful hour or so washing, conditioning and brushing her horse's bright, copper-y mane and tail, and was now carefully winding his mane into perfect little button braids. The stallion had shamelessly started dozing off, leaning into her as she scratched behind his ears as she worked. Even if it was only a short training session, she wanted them both to look as glamorous as she would have them appear at Ascot.
