Description
"Then Thingol was filled with fear and wonder; and because he would not deprive Lúthien of the lights of heaven, lest she fail and fade, and yet he would restrain her, he caused a house to be built from which she should not escape. Not far... stood the greateat of all the trees in the Forest... this mighty beech was named Hírilorn, and it had three trunks... far aloft between the shafts of Hírilorn a wooden house was built, and there Lúthien was made to dwell...It is told... how she escaped from the house in Hírilorn; for she put forth her arts of enchantment, and caused her hair to grow to great length, and of it she wove a dark robe that wrapped her beauty like a shadow..."
- The Silmarillion (Chapter 19: Of Beren and Luthien) by J.R.R. Tolkien.
So: Lúthien wants to go rescue Beren from deadly peril. Her dad doesn't. He builds a treehouse in the tallest tree he can find and shuts her in it. She grows her hair super-long with magic, weaves it into a magical sleep-inducing/wearer-concealing cloak, which she uses to put her guards to sleep and escape on a rope made from the leftover hair.
It's like Rapunzel. But cooler.
The tengwar read "Lúthien Hírilorndesse" which is a mash-up of Sindarin and Quenya, but hey, I'm learning. It translates to "Lúthien in Hírilorn." It's a picture of her sitting and growing her hair.
Drawn in pencil, colored in GIMP. I'm putting it in "Traditional" because I'm proud of it.

I think it's a beautiful picture, one of my favourites of Luthien that I've seen on DeviantART. I've always been disappointed that there wasn't an Alan Lee illustrated Silmarillion, now I think something more in the style of this would be even better. It just seems more fitting.
Not that I disliked the Ted Nasmith illustrations!

Wow, thank you
Yeah, Nasmith has a very - I don't know, landscapey/painterly style? (Haven't seen the book itself, but I had the Silmarillion calendar). It would be fun to have some different versions, maybe even one book with different illustrators contributing. It's no fun when people start thinking of a fantasy world as only looking one way, because only one or two illustrators are well-known for portraying it (I was actually just having a conversation about this last night)

I love your coloring! It's so subtle yet it reads really well. And I love your wood grain (though I wish there was a bit more of a gradient at the bottom between wood and empty space). Also, you've captured Luthien's melancholia perfectly. Props!

Thank you very much
I should go back and try colouring this again, now that I've had more practiced - maybe some of the annoying spaces would be better

Yes.
And that part of the book is so inventively "magical" - a treehouse in the highest tree in the forest, quests to steal ancient jewels, turning into animals, death, a talking dog, etc. It's one of the most real, as in, it sounds like a fairy tale/mythology, in the Silmarillion
