...What happens when the daughter starts to lose trust in her mother.This is the first time I've drawn Mrs. Wheeler and I'm pleased with how she looks
This story behind this picture is that it take place after Battle City and Serenity's operation. When she came back her mother started to become more cold and distant with her daughter, and it's starting to effect Serenity and question her mother, and during their shopping trip Mrs. Wheeler started to make bitter remarks about Joey that shocked Serenity, but she kept it to herself so there wouldn't be a fight.
And it made Serenity think about everything her mom did, from leaving Joey with their abusive drunk father, how her mom was barely at the hospital and worked all the time and to when her mother never stayed with Serenity after the operation to see her remove her bandages, while Serenity it was because her mother had to work to keep her in the hospital and couldn't support two children on minimum wage she starts to suspect otherwise.
And after they were done shopping and Mrs. Wheeler left the house for the night, Serenity calls Joey for comfort.
Serenity and Mrs. Wheeler belong to Kazuki Takahashi.

I always tried to give her the benefit of the doubt given her situation with her ex and the financial problems they had along with raising two children, with one having a serious illness that she had to care for more as well as the Japanese law in divorce and custody.
But I did research on the law, and in the manga Joey didn't say anything good about his mother, so that shows she wasn't the best parent either, especially when Serenity appears to be neglected.

I also tried hard to give her the benefit of the doubt for a while, too. But looking into their situation (and Serenity being my favorite character, with Joey not being far behind) makes me feel worse about the parents (I would even say their worse than Gozaburo in certain ways)
A little different topic, but, what do you think Serenity's age is in the main series? To me, that picture in Joey's wallet and her general demeanor leads me to think somewhere around 12-14 (those are the common ages of middle school kids in Japan I think), but others say she's 16, and I don't really believe that. AbsoluteAnime.com lists her as 13 which I'm inclined to believe.Β Β Β

And there was another reason why I began to distrust Mrs Wheeler besides her leaving Joey with an alcoholic and not really being there for Serenity's eye operation. I did research on her potential eye diseases, with my headcanon now that she has Retinoblastoma, those surgeries do NOT cost thre million dollars, it's mostly ranged from hundreds to thousands, but not millions.
I believe she's fifteen years old since Mokuba is thirteen but still looks like a child with Serenity looking older in canon. I think the picture Joey had of her when she was in Middle school was taken a year before she started going blind so she was probably fourteen then.

Yeah, now that think about it I can see her being 15.
The cost of the surgery did seem too high, even by fiction standards.

Besides not having the scene with her surgery from the anime, I was always sad that the manga never had the virtual world arc, since that had some of my favorite duels and it gave Serenity more to do. (After R was released, I remember thinking that it would be adapted into the manga)

Yea, like what was the childhood like? What was their father like? Why is Ms Wheeler not close to Joey? What are Serenity's feelings toward her parents? Sigh.... Well at least we have fan work to speculate

Yep, with me I think Mrs. Wheeler was unfaithful and was a con artist, while Mr. Wheeler was a gambler and drunk I feel both parents were to blame for the divorce and for their family falling apart. And I think Mrs. Wheeler is not close to Joey because he looks like his dad and I think Joey was the only mature one who called out his parents on their crap and Mrs. Wheeler doesn't want to face the truth. And I think while Serenity was kinda nice to her mom and hugged her while crying, I think after the operation she and her mom became more distant because we never saw her mom with Serenity after the surgery or stayed to make sure Serenity's operation went well, so that implies Serenity was neglected a bit and doesn't have anybody.

I mean to abandon Joey? And raised Serenity alone. she was probablyΒ overprotective too judging by Serenity's personality.
I wish we could have seen more of the story in the hospital. I once again blame the card games for that.
