Description

    [This is an analysis of a character from my story Project: Gaia. Each Planetess is shown in their underwear (except Neptune), however they normally wear clothing of some kind. The following is a short story featuring a random sequence in this character's life.]

  “Happy birthday, Gaia! How old are you now? 4.54 billion years? Boy, the time sure does go by fast. I still remember when you were only 3 billion years old.” Mars said as she hugged her best friend close.

    “Thanks, guys! And thanks for the party! I wasn’t sure what I was going to do for the big day.” Gaia replied.

    “It’s not much of a party. Only about 5 of us to be honest.” Selena explained.

    “Why does a party have to be big? I think it’ll be nice if it’s just us together. Isn’t that right?” Saturn said as she hugged Gaia.

     Even though several of her friends couldn’t be there due to scheduling issues, she was happy that Mars, Saturn, and Neptune had shown up. They even brought a cake made of stardust: Gaia’s favorite!

    Gaia smiled and withdrew. “This is going to be great! We can all get together get around and toss meteors at each other and try to smash them together! Then we can sit down and talk about how big the universe is! That would be a fun topic for...Neptune. Where is Neptune, by the way?” She asked, her smile slowly disappearing.

    Everybody glanced around Gaia’s small bedroom, but there was no sign of the bright blue planetess. Mars shrugged and Saturn looked concerned. “She...walked in here with us...do you think she’s downstairs eating the cake already? She wouldn’t do that without telling us, would she?” Saturn asked.

    Mars crossed her arms. “Naw, Neptune doesn’t strike me as the kind of girl to do that. Maybe Uranus or Pluto. But to be honest, I’m not even seen Neptune eat.” She noted.

    “Did you...check the roof? The last time she was here at our house, she snuck out onto the roof.” Selena pointed out.

    Gaia looked to the nearest window. That did seem like something she would do.

    “Alright...I guess for now, you three hang out here. I’ll go see if she’s up there.” Gaia said.

    “Be careful. You wouldn’t want to slip and fall. After all, you’re kinda carrying a lot of little people on you.” Mars pointed out as she plopped down on the bed.

    “Oh, don’t say that! Now I’m kinda worried about Gaia. Are you sure she’ll be fine out there?” Saturn said.

    Selena flew over and landed on Saturn’s head, playfully pushing against her cat ears. “Naw, Gaia’s fine. It’s not like she’s clumsy. Not unlike someone we know.” She said as she smiled mischievously.

    The window slid open and Gaia crawled through onto the ledge. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted blue. Sitting up at the top of the roof, staring into the twinkling sky, was Neptune. And for some reason, she was completely naked.

    “Uh...guys...I found Neptune…” Gaia murmured.

    “Called it! Ask her why she’s on the roof.” Selena said as she sat on Saturn’s shoulder, playing with her hair.

    Gaia crawled up the roof until she was sitting right next to Neptune. “Uh...hey Nep…” She said with an uncomfortable smile.

    Neptune glanced over and said “Sup?”

    The shy planetess nodded. Then the two of them sat there in uncomfortable silence.

    “Neptune...why are you naked?” Gaia asked after an oddly long time.

    “Cause I’m a planet.” she said.

    “That doesn’t quite explain why. I’m a Planet, and I’m wearing clothes.” Gaia replied.

    “But it’s really not supposed to be like that. In real life, Planets don’t wear clothes. And they’re also giant floating orbs in the sky. Really, we shouldn’t be able to talk to each other. And if you were this close to me in real life, we’d get pulled into each other’s gravitational pull and get smashed.” Neptune explained.

    Gaia took a moment to soak that all in. “Uh...I feel like you’re trying to lure me into having an existential crisis...but I’m just really confused…” she murmured softly as she scratched her head.

Neptune glanced over at her, making eye contact. “But the truth is, the main reason why I’m not wearing clothes is just cause I don’t feel like it. And besides, I’m at your house and you know me. You don’t mind if I strip a bit?” She asked.

“Well, I mean sure, you’re allowed to get comfortable around me. But I’d like you to wear something at least. Like a shirt or something.” Gaia replied.

“Do I have to wear underwear?” The blue planetess inquired.

“...No?”

Neptune shrugged. “Alright. I’ll have to borrow a shirt then.” she said as she slid down the roof and entered in through the window.

“But...where did the clothes you had on go?” Gaia murmured, though Neptune was already gone. The shy planetess was still confused, but that’s just what being friends with Neptune was like. She was kind of mysterious and Gaia liked that about her. She felt like Neptune was saying something true and honest, but Gaia could just never quite understand what she meant.
