Wow I keep scrolling back up to the picture trying to fugure how in the hell you DREW that!! I still can't figure it out. Many of the other drawings you can tell somehow that it is a drawing not a picture, but this one I still can't tell it from a photo. Absolutley Amazing!!

Thank you!
Humm...., yes. okay a short description: Buy a really good (and rather expensive) paper, at least 300g, relatively rough surface! Use always a clean!!! paper under your drawing arm, don't touch the paper with your hand!
Begin with a sketch (just the outlines), VERY pale using HB-pencils without any pressure. Once satisfied apply first shadows with the HB, deepen with HB. Be sure to leave the highlights white. Deepen again and again but avoid to much pressure because you may leave grooves in the paper. Change to 2B, later to 4B. Deepen, but leave all areas with tiny details alone. Once satisfied add all the small details (ie. ashes, filters, hairs and foldings on hand...) using all hardnesses. Only after this change to 8B and make all the black areas black. Use 2B and 4B for some blending areas. If there is a bigger uniform grey area use a rolled sheet of paper or a so called "tortillion" to smudge. Don't overdo! Retouch using all pencil-types. Don't use a rubber (excepting the white highlights)! Add the "frame" using a ruler and 8B. Sign and deviate.
Try it. You can't do anything wrong. Maybe you aren't satisfied with the first few tries. But after these....
Hint: As reference choose things you can examine over and over and from all sides under different light conditions. Compare with the image you have drawn. Find the differencies, correct them. A good drawing isn't drawn on a single evening. You have to see it under different light conditions to observe the weaknesses.
But have in mind that you don't want to substitiute a photo; add more weight to this or that detail, focus on light-shadow or texture or overall-mood..... A photo NEVER could have this depth of sharpness (under these weak light conditions), would have been blurry either in foreground or background!

Congrats on DD, Wholba. Well deserved. I like the light and shadow throughout. Those ciggarette butts are fantastically drawn, as is the hand -- great detail. If it wasn't for the 'drawn' texture that you get, I can buy this as a photograph of real life.
Mai.

Mine runs out of batteries a lot... I'm sorry for such a random, stupid, pointless comment that has practically nothing to do with the artwork and my thoughts on it; I actually thought after I posted it: 'Geeps, that was probably the biggest insult to my intelligence I ever posted on this website'.
I never told you that I love all the possibilities behind this picture, and the dreamy and almost surreal feel your shading gives it, but at the same time is stark and edgy; much like that possessed feeling of being mortally tired and unable to sleep. It's what I noticed second, after the mouse.

oh my, don't be so draconic to yourself. there's nothing you should be ashamed of....
your second short-description is maybe to philosophical although its a nice one; while drawing my aim was a "true" representation of a partly filled ashtray (and it's surroundings) focussing on the different types of stumps and ash-particles.
regarding running out of batteries: so does mine. and because this is so i installed permanently a cheap charger besides the screen, 2 batteries are inside this, 2 inside the mouse. and so the necessary changement is quick and simple.

ah, the stumps and ash particles. Such is the crime of my computer not letting me access the full view option. you are a cool person, person.
