Aulaea and Soren both woke with sore backs after spending the night on the hard wood floor. They could smell coffee was hot and ready, as Scarlett - contrary to the two - had a good night's sleep and got up early to prepare a nice breakfast for them.
"So why'd you guys sleep on the floor last night?" Scarlett asked quite randomly a few minutes into their breakfast time.
"Wha-- How do you know we slept on the floor!? What were you peeking into my room for!?" Aulaea questioned.
"I wanted to see if you were up yet." Scarlett answered, before asking again why they spent the night on the floor. Soren briefly explained that neither of them wanted to sleep in the bed while the other slept elsewhere, so...they both ended up on the floor. It made less sense when she said it out loud like that.
"So...why the floor then?" Scarlett questioned again.
"Did you not hear what she just said?" Aulaea retorted.
"Yeah but, you could've just both used the bed?"
Aulaea's face immediately flushed with color, cheeks turning bright red. "What!? Are you crazy!? We can't do that! There isn't enough space for both of us in there!" She protested.
"The bed isn't that small, I literally have the same exact kind in my room, you could've just cuddled." Scarlett mumbled.
"No we couldn't have!!" Aulaea's face turned even brighter as she quickly dismissed the matter and finished her breakfast.
Soren didn't completely understand why Aulaea was so flustered by the idea of cuddling together, but she was keen to get the day started anyway so she could get home.
Aulaea offered for them to ride her carriage horses together - two stunning Dutch Tuigpaard stallions - however, Soren pointed out that the enchantment on her limbs made them quite heavy, and worried of hurting the horses' back. The studs were quite tall and Aulaea doubted Soren could hurt them, but appreciated the concern and hooked one up to a buggy to ride in instead.
The demon was a bit irritated by how remote Soren's home was, they eventually reached a point where there were no more roads leading to where they were going and had to find their way through the woods. Thankfully, Soren knew the way quite well and was able to direct them safely through.
"Must you dwell so far into the wilderness? It seems awfully inconvenient." Aulaea huffed after they hit a particularly large bump in their path.
"Yeah, actually. I'm uh...not terribly welcome in the city." Soren chuckled bashfully as she glanced away.
"Oh, that explains it." The demon muttered with a slight smirk. "Whatcha do?"
"I murdered seven people." It was strange, Soren didn't normally like to mention the incident, especially to people she hasn't known too long. But she found Aulaea easy to be around, easy to talk to. She didn't really mind opening up to her.
"Daaaamn! Seven!? Good job, most people don't get away with that many!" Aulaea laughed.
Soren blushed faintly. It was odd to be praised for doing something so terrible, something she knew was bad. The demon's words made her feel almost prideful of her deed, however; they did deserve it after all, she did the world a service to rid it of such awful people. "Hah, thank you." She mumbled happily before turning to the other again with a smile, "I have someone working to clear me and my friends' names, so hopefully I'll be able to show my face in the city without worry of being bludgeoned again." She knew she wasn't killed because she was wanted, but she would expect to be when she was originally due to be executed anyway.
"Good! You should stop by the mortuary sometime when that happens, we can have a girls' night out or something." The demon beamed, hoping to be able to see Soren again after this. She's been such great company, it'd be a shame if this would be their only time spent together.
"I'd love to! It's not always easy being the only woman around the manor." Soren chuckled. "And hey, you'll know the route now once we get there, so you can always come out here for a visit as well."
Aulaea was a little surprised by this, though she figured she oughtn't be. Most humans were afraid of demons, but clearly this one didn't think any different of her for it. "I assume I'll have to keep my human appearance around your friends?"
Soren paused, thoughtful for a moment before shrugging. "I'm...not sure, honestly. They don't even know I'm undead." She sighed. "I don't know how I'm going to explain this to them. What do I even say? 'Sorry for being gone all night, I got murdered and spent the night in a mortuary.'" Soren shook her head with a sigh. "I don't want to lie to them, but...I don't know. What are they going to think?"
Aulaea turned her gaze to the human beside her, a more serious look on her face as she nudged Soren gently. "Hey. If they're really your friends, they're not going to like you any less. And if they do, screw them and come stay with me and Scarlett if you need to. You're literally the sweetest and most open-minded human I've ever met, you don't deserve shitty friends."
Soren's cheeks flushed with color, bowing her head shyly. She was at a loss for words for a moment. She wanted to say the same to Aulaea, but it came out was incoherent mumbling due to how flustered she was. Aulaea understood it well enough all the same, grinning to herself as her gaze turned back to the terrain ahead.
The demon was right. Soren couldn't keep that kind of secret from them forever, and if they'd think less of her for it, then she shouldn't be living with them anyway. She decided she'd tell them, explain all she could when she got home.
TLDR; After an awkward discussion at breakfast, Aulaea gives Soren a ride back home. Soren is concerned about what her friends will think about her being undead, but Aulaea convinces her to just tell them the truth, offering a place to stay if it doesn't go well. Soren is still nervous, but decided to just do it and tell them when she gets home.
I know Scarlett has been a bit of a 'ghost' character thus far, but she's going to get a more prominent role in things once I actually finish her ref sheet X'D (Update from 6/1/2023, finished Scarlett's ref and added links to this and past deviations when she's mentioned in the story)
