Ardor and his zebra Jester being completely bamboozled after unknowingly running through an invisible rift between worlds XD I usually like to show the other person's characters in the art when I draw scenes from rps, but this moment made such a clear mental image in my head that I just HAD to do a lil sketch of it.
I didn't entirely plan on including quite this much story, but I didn't want it to be cut off at a random point, so I put in enough that it comes to an almost-conclusion as the characters move away from that particular spot.
------
The rain had finally let up when Ardor so eagerly headed outside, having been deathly bored stuck indoors waiting out a fierce thunderstorm. He's one to take risks, but climbing about the roof when there's lightning in the sky is just asking for trouble, and riding in such a relentless downpour wouldn't be so fun either.
Running down the stone-paved path and vaulting the rock wall bordering the turnout fields, he paused to fix his braid before calling out to his steed grazing in the distance. The stallion promptly lifted his head before cantering over, stopping just in front of his rider and nuzzling against him.
He was a riding zebra, bred for nearly a thousand years for size and temperament. Standing at 16hh, Jester's Privilege was on the shorter end of the height range, but he was just as loyal and obedient as any well-trained horse.
Eager to get going, Ardor moved to mount the zebra, only for him to jump away playfully and beckon Ardor to give chase while he cantered away. This was a normal ritual between the two, essentially the only 'misbehavior' the zebra will display since finishing his warhorse training. If anyone wants to take him out of the fields, they're going to have to work for it. In Jester's mind, it was a fun game to make his rider run and catch him.
Ardor rather enjoyed running after Jester, grateful the stallion wasn't actually trying to flee from him, or else he'd never catch him. He giggled as he finally managed to heave himself onto the zebra's back, at which point Jester stopped goofing around and let Ardor guide him back towards the barn, jumping the rock wall together to save time.
"What the fuck, Ardor? The gate is literally right there," A voice drew Ardor's attention briefly, looking over at his twin brother while he rode at a walk to the barn.
"I don't have time for gates, it takes long enough to saddle him as it is and I want to be out there now," Ardor explained with a gesture toward his steed.
He did take his time getting Jester properly tacked up before the pair were finally free to go out for a proper ride, pulling a mask on over his mouth and a hood over his head before riding out. There are certain animals out there that he only ever sees during or after the rain, so he was hoping to catch a glimpse of something cool; that and, something about the forest after a good storm always just felt so refreshing.
It wasn't long before he was cantering through the woods, jumping fallen trees and weaving between boulders in his aimless wandering. They were mid-jump over another log when the scenery so suddenly changed; the area was clear of trees, the land had clearly not been rained on, there were buildings all around, and before Ardor even had the chance to think, he was haphazardly making a hard stop to avoid colliding with a fence right in front of them that definitely was not there before.
Lavender eyes blinked as he looked around, struggling to process what just happened. How did he get here? Where even was he? Even Jester felt tense beneath him, a bit overwhelmed with all the new sights and smells neither steed or rider were familiar with. Ironically, Ardor had found himself in the visitor field, right at the fence where they were facing the yearling and foal and mare paddocks.
Rosie was leading Arthur back from their ride in the woods, having dismounted by the gate and taking both reins in one hand while she pulled the lever to open the gate and led Arthur in through the gate. They were coming through the gate at the end of the path by the mare barn. She had to turn, stopping her mount by the gate as she closed it. Arthur threw his head up, giving his handler some hassle while she struggled between him and the gate.
"What is with you?" The brunette haired woman rolled her eyes and flicked the end of the reins playfully toward Arthur's shoulder. The grey stallion snorted and blew got air in her face before becoming obedient again.
Rosie turned away from the gate, toward where Ardor and his zebra would be. She hadn't actually noticed them while they walked down the pathway, it seemed as if nothing ere different. Until Arthur stopped dead, planting all four hooves wide and refused to move. The stud could smell something unfamiliar and Rosie, being half blinded by the sun, couldn't see what her horse was so worried about. The 16.1hh stud snorted again, flicking his tail and stamping. He clearly knew what was unfamiliar. Rosie gave a pull on his reins lightly. "You've not been right since Harrison was fired... Hey boy." She patted his shoulder and pulled his head down gently. "It's okay Arthur, honestly." Rosie almost ate her own words when she turned around, stood at the cross road and she saw a rather bizarre sight Infront of her.
"Jesus Christ fuck!" She jumped about a foot in the air, heart palpating in her chest. "Good lord you scared me! Who are you and why are you here?" She asked, frowning. Arthur gave a satisfied snort now that his handler knew what he was being stubborn over and he stared rather confusedly at the zebra, practically as tall as him, standing in the visitor paddock. He flicked away flies with his tail, lifting his head up high like a giraffe for a moment before he brought it back down and stood like a statue.
Upon seeing movement along the path, Jester raised his head and flared his nostrils to get a good long sniff at the air, curious of this other horse he didn't know.
Ardor wasn't even paying attention at first, too busy in his own head trying to work out how the hell he ended up in this unfamiliar place, looking behind him as if the answer would be there somewhere.
It wasn't until Rosie drew closer that hourglass pupils fixed on her from under Ardor's dark hood, warily analyzing in his head if she was a threat or not. Typically Ardor was a fearless kind of person, but being in this particular predicament had him on edge.
"I ah, I'm not-- I'm not really sure," Ardor laughed a bit nervously, a hand reaching under his hood to brush some hair behind his ear.
"I mean-- I know who I am, I just...I'm a little lost I guess?" He didn't know how to begin explaining what just happened to him, he could barely wrap his head around it himself. "Uh, where are we, exactly?" He grinned awkwardly behind the mask, a little embarrassed as it wasn't often he lost his way, let alone badly enough to ask for directions.
Rosie spent a moment to recompose herself and raised an eyebrow, thinking to herself for a moment, she must’ve looked stupid for a second there. She unclipped her helmet, putting the strap through the D ring on Arthur’s saddle. “Lost?” She scratched her head with one hand, obviously bewildered. “ Heatherwood Estate, in Britain.” She paused again, as Arthur began to relax and she looked around.
“ How did you get in? The main gate is always locked unless we have visitors or an event?” Rosie’s green eyes fixated on the mount of the person infront of her. “Is that… a Zebra?” She asked, astonished. Rosie thought to herself for a moment longer and 5en spoke up again. “I’ve never seen one… that large, if so.” She shook her head as if to see if she were awake or dreaming.
Arthur stretched his head toward the fence, taking in as much scent as he could. The Dorset Sporthorse stallion twitched his ears, trying to work out what he was looking at. In his mind, horses weren’t striped, not this much. The grey took a step closer but remained rather reserved, listening to Rosie giving a gentle tug on his reins again.
What little of Ardor's face that was visible paled a bit upon hearing her answer. Britain? He's never heard of it. Just how far from home was he? "Okay...yeah, that's...fine, I...definitely know where that is..." He mumbled to himself, trying mostly just to reassure himself and it wasn't working too well.
"I...I didn't see a gate..." He mumbled, not that gates typically stopped him from getting into places anyway. His train of thought shifted back to his own steed when Rosie asked about him, almost laughing at the question. Zebras weren't as common as horses in his world, but they weren't exactly a spectacle either.
"Well, yeah, I've never seen a horse with this many stripes," He answered amusedly, "I don't think he's...that tall, is he?" He added quietly.
Another moment of thought, staring at Rosie confusedly. "Would you happen to know any mages around here who've been...I dunno, messing with any kind of transportation magic?" That was the best theory he had, that some kind of spell went wrong and he was somehow caught up in it.
Jester too was stretching his head towards the other stallion, ears perked forward and sniffing curiously. He wanted to touch noses and properly greet the other, but he wouldn't move an inch without command from his rider, not while under the saddle.
He was quite used to horses, currently he was the only zebra in the estate back home. Now that his mind was off the initial shock of being sent to a completely different place, everything seemed relatively normal to his equine mind.
Rosie looked like a dumb child, staring at Ardor. "Mages..? Teleportation magic?" She couldn't help but laugh a little. "Last I checked, they were in children's story books." She realised a little too late that perhaps laughing wasn't the right reaction. She had addressed the mage question first, but now, letting Arthur graze at the grass beneath him, addressed the other sections of conversation. "Well... He's almost as tall as Arthur." She pointed to his withers. "Arthur stands at 16.1 hands high." She looked back at Jester. " Just by looking at him.. he'd about 15.3 hands, no wait.. 16 hands." She took a step closer and stretched out her hand. "The main gate in is a good six feet tall. My name is Rosie." She looked at the striped equine again and then back at Arthur, who pushed his nose toward the other stud, snorting warm air and trying to be friendly.
"Good boy." Rosie said to Arthur, one hand holding his reins while the other was stretched toward Ardor.
Rosie's amusement from his inquiry only further confused Ardor. Does that mean no, then? Of course they were in children's books, they're in just about every book anyways. He didn't ask further into it though, moving on to the other matters.
He glanced between Arthur and Jester, nodding. "Yeah, but like, riding zebras can get to like...17 or 18 hands." He pointed out with a shrug. His eyes followed her hand, before blinking as he realized he hadn't yet introduced himself either.
"Ardor Fallow, of Arcamourne." He introduced himself with a light bow, lightly tugging his hood to signify tipping a hat before shaking the offered hand. "I'm sorry about trespassing, I'm really not sure how I got here." He added more quietly, feeling more and more lost the more he contemplated how on earth he was going to find his way home.
Jester seemed happy to kindly greet the other horse, earning a pat on the neck from Ardor when his rider noticed how nice he was being; not that it was out of the ordinary for him, he was good with other animals usually.
"Would you have a map I could take a look at, per chance?" He then asked, figuring he could sort out where he's ended up that way.
Rosie looked at Jester, absorbing the information she had just been given about riding zebras. “Riding zebras? I’ve never heard of those, only the casual zebras you would see in Africa.” She paused, watching as Arthur was playing nice and considering he had never met this horse… zebra.. she was impressed. “Is that a name for one of the little villages nearby?” She asked.
Rosie thought about it for a moment, and then it seemed as if a lightbulb popped on in her head. “A map? Yeah sure. Uhhhh, I think the best place for your ho- zebra, would be probably out here in the pasture, or you can bring him into the stallions stables. Then we can go find a map, we have cctv cameras so your companion will be very safe.” She patted Arthur’s neck and then pointed to the east, where the stallion barn was sitting next to the show pasture.
Ardor blinked yet again. Never heard of riding zebras? How? Oh dear, he was getting a bad feeling he was very far from home indeed. Where even is Africa? He took a deep breath, trying to stay calm. Surely he could make it back home once he's had a visual as to where he was.
"L-little village? It's-- it's one of the largest cities in the kingdom--" He mumbled, but digressed. He smiled a bit under the mask as he dismounted, grateful Rosie was willing to help him out. He didn't have a clue as to what a cc-whatever-it-was-she-just-said was, but he appreciated the aid nonetheless.
"Thanks, I'll put him in the stables for now." He decided. He didn't know how long a journey he'd need to go to get home, so it was best to have Jester rest up before the trip. He took hold of the reins and started towards where Rosie had pointed him, glancing over at her a few times for confirmation he was going the right way until he found his way into the barn to settle him into a vacant stall, wherever seemed okay.
TLDR; Ardor was out on a ride just outside his own property back home, when all of the sudden he found himself someplace else entirely. Rosie found him shortly after while returning from a ride herself, everyone is very confused, but they're determined to figure out the situation together.
