Description Mathew the Daemon.

The Daemons had started off as a slave race to a race of Demons that inhabited another dimension. Several thousand Daemons managed to escape to our dimension long ago, hoping to escape their inhumane masters and hide away on Earth. Those who had survived the first few tumultuous centuries had learned to conceal themselves amongst humanity. Some of them preyed on humans, treating them much the same way they’d been treated by their master’s, others chose to live as quietly as possible, or even taking up roles as protectors. Most Daemons lived in fear of the day when the Demon Masters would find a way to invade Earth in force.

Daemons rarely mated for life, most of the time if a female felt the urge to reproduce she picked a male and they stayed together long enough for her to give birth, perhaps sometime longer. When they parted the child was usually raised by the same-sex parent. Being essentially immortal unless killed, Daemons took to various subterfuges in order to “end” one life and begin another somewhere else before the humans noticed their longevity.

Mathew’s mother had “felt the urge” and found Mathew’s father. When Mathew was born she abandoned him to his father to raise. Daemons mature at about the same rate as humans, so Mathew was on his own by his 20s. His father put him through college and he majored in English, Human Psychology, and History. With his father’s help he purchased a small bookstore and spent much of his time writing, mostly stories of Gothic Horror/Romance and other odd stuff.

Daemons normally eat food like anyone else, but sometimes they feel the need to FEED. This urge comes more often if the individual relies on his Daemonic Powers a lot, or finds himself suffering injuries frequently. FEEDING requires a Daemon to siphon off part of the life-force of a living being, and doesn’t work on Daemons or other supernatural beings, just natural ones like humans. Normally the victims can recover if they aren’t killed and will suffer no permanent harm. Many less subtle Daemons don’t care if their victims survive though, and sometimes the death of the victim is the only way to conceal the crime since it causes the victim a great deal of emotional trauma.

Mathew lived a very quiet life, rarely used his powers except only to conceal his true form, and thus rarely needed to FEED. When the urge did come upon him he’d haunt the cities dark alley’s in disguise looking for criminals to prey on. He would leave them alive, but with a terror of Hell in the hopes of convincing them to change their ways, and usually within a few days they’d have recovered the life-energy he’d stolen from them.

It was a few years after he’d established this life for himself when his father had faked his own death and disappeared. The will had given him rights to his father’s huge mansion, but very quickly after the funeral the banks had shown up demanding he figure out some way of paying off all the mortgages his father had levied on it. Mathew had struggled with the finances, not wanting to give up the home he’d been raised in yet. His sometimes meager income hadn’t been enough to cover everything and he’d been forced to slowly strip the mansion of much of its furniture as he sold pieces to make ends meet.

It was on “one of THOSE nights” when he’d been wandering back allies when he’d heard a female scream. He’d run to investigate and found an attacker with a nasty-looking knife leaning over a prone female. He’d leapt at the attacker before he could further harm the girl and they had fought a vicious battle before Mathew had taken the other down. Unfortunately he’d not been fast enough and had actually been stabbed a couple times, and in FEEDING he’d accidentally killed the man. The girl was only semi-conscious, but her injuries seemed more bruises than anything truly dangerous. Mathew decided to take her back to the mansion rather than risk a hospital and a lot of questions he wasn’t prepared to answer.

The girl - she called herself Lisa - had recovered quickly. And much to his surprise she’d seduced HIM. He thought it was ironic that a creature that had helped spawn legends of Succubi and Incubi had been seduced by a human, but he’d been alone for a very long time, and some part of the heat of having fought for his life (and possibly her fears about how close she’d been to ending hers) had made her advances impossible to resist.

Shortly after that Lisa installed herself at the mansion as Mathew’s regular lover. She didn’t know about his secret at first, but eventually she figured it out. To Mathew’s surprise she didn’t even mind.

She was the one who came up with the very unorthodox plan for saving the mansion from the creditors. She’d gathered together all of the other girls who’d worked for her “former” pimp and moved them into the mansion as well, turning the old place halfway into a brothel. The funds they brought in more than covered for the various expenses – especially for the huge mortgages - and Lisa made sure to put away a fair amount for each girl for emergencies. She even arranged to pay for schooling for those girls who wanted it, going so far as getting some of them enrolled at local community colleges. When other Pimps started coming around in the hopes of picking up the “loose stable” Mathew and Lisa convinced them to move on. Mathew had a way of giving off an unnerving presence when he wished without even revealing himself - as part of his Unearthly Powers. That combined with a little of the life-essence drain convinced most of them to move on, and Mathew became the new protector for a house full of young prostitutes. It wasn’t the sort of role he’d have chosen for himself, but in a strange sort of way it felt right.

He and Lisa kept his true nature a secret from the other girls, though they all suspected there was something strange about him. But all things considered they just didn’t feel that doing anything about it was worth loosing their safe-haven. What the girls DID know about him was that he often valued his privacy and he was a writer and often needed the quiet to write, so when he set a portion of the mansion aside for his private domain and kept the doors triple locked, they left him alone. At other times he enjoyed the chance to feel human and he’d immerse himself into the community of the household.

Daemons can share passion with others, including humans, but they can only produce offspring with other Daemons. Day after day, Mathew began to realize he was in love with Lisa, and wondered at the fact that she seemed to love him as well. He worried about the future, but for now he simply chose to find a new purpose in this beautiful woman he held in his arms.

Mathew was a character I’d created for an RPG called Nightlife. Mathew wasn't the characters original name though, I've managed to forget that though I haven't forgotten the character-concept. The games premise was similar to White Wolf’s Vampire the Masquerade, which came out about a year later. Supernatural Beings shared the Modern-Day Earth with Humans, but in secret. They had several secret societies, some dedicated to keeping the peace between Man and Monster, others dedicated to bringing Human Civilization to its knees before Supernatural Masters. Daemons were just one of the several playable races. Unlike White Wolf’s World of Darkness, the races weren’t their own factions, each of the various secret societies included members of nearly every major race, and several minor ones.

Once again, you have outdone yourself with both the story and the artwork. Fantastic. Plus, I know what it's like to forget a RPG character's name, can't remember my main character's name, but his Alter Hades Succubus wife... her I remember (ahhh Sin, if only you were real).

Thanks. And yeah, it's rare for me to forget a character name, but sometimes I use similar names so often that I forget one and then come up with something different later. I almost renamed him David, but that's just the modern version of Daffyd which I've used too many times already. I did a different version of the character for a game called Inomine a while ago and his name was Mathias, Mathew came to mind as a decent variant. Mathias was an angel whose purpose was to help guard the concept of Familial Love, but in the modern day he was seeing so many broken marriages and child abuse and stuff that it broke his spirit and he went renegade, and eventually ended up in basically the same position as Mathew, watching over a house full of girls who'd run away from home and become prostitutes in order to survive. An Angel playing the part of Pimp in the hopes of redeeming girls whose lives might have become much worse, if they'd managed to live at all. It's kind of my way of trying to find hope in a world that sometimes feels so damned hopeless.

Thank you. I discovered the game, and that somebody was running it, several years ago, this was my concept for a character for the game, but I never got to play him. I borrowed part of the story from the movie Risky Business, which included one of my favorite movie lines "sometimes ya just gotta say - What the Fuck?" Which I wish I could do more often when I get a sudden urge to flirt with somebody, or do something out of character that might make me a new friend.

Yeah, well I don't even know if my oven works, and if it does and I actually managed to bake, and they were edible(!) they'd be all MINE, nobody else gets any! I don't even think I can bake in my imagination. LOL!

WickedPrince In reply to De3pBl4ck [2008-09-30 23:30:30 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. There really isn't any more to the story. He was an idea I had for a character I never got to play. I've been in an unproductive unimaginative funk lately so I'm going through some old character ideas I had for something to do.

De3pBl4ck In reply to WickedPrince [2008-10-02 22:29:56 +0000 UTC]

Hmm…
Maybe there could be a way in which the story could be added onto.
Damned if I know what it is.
I spent most of my writing energy for today typing in "The Tinman's Creed"…

WickedPrince In reply to De3pBl4ck [2008-10-03 04:33:55 +0000 UTC]

Well basically it's a matter of figuring out where they went from there. In the good old "Hero's Journey" plot steps what I wrote is "The Ordinary World" introduction that tells you who the hero is and what his life was like before he took on the adventure. The trick is deciding what his adventure would be. The easiest idea would be another supernatural being who decides to usurp his little "harem" like some of the mortal Pimps have that I described.

Oh, I got an idea just like this very minute!
How about another SNB, of the opposite sex of course (Or not… ), who falls for the protagonist and attempts, in several very elaborate schemes, to win his heart?
That might get old fast, but it might help add some direly needed inspiration.

One of the things I was thinking of was somehow our antagonist steals our protagonists girlfriend out of spite or jealousy or something.

Hmmmm. I might have to drag out the game book and see what options are there. Though honestly I've got too many stories left hanging now. I have a piece for Cherish I wrote a week ago that I'm still mulling over, and need to figure out the next bad guy for Cairbre and all that. So we'll see about this one.
