Description I've never really had a chance to talk about it much, but one of my favorite animated films is Richard Williams' The Thief and the Cobbler.  Although it was never completed by the original creator, some of the footage was acquired by Disney in the 90s and was later released in an edited form as "The Princess and the Cobbler" or "Arabian Knight" depending on the company.  Some of you might remember the 90s version, which had a voicover cast starring Matthew Broderick, but the original was very different and extremely artistic, based on the stylized art of Persian miniatures.   Disney is actually believed to have based Aladdin on much of the plot and there are a lot of similarities in the characters and scenes.  Princess Yum-Yum is this film's sassy Arabian princess, although she actually gets to play a fairly independent role and joins the hero on his quest to save the day.

I totally recommend checking out the "Recobbled Cut" of the movie which has been recreated by a fan to better match the directors' original vision: www.youtube.com/channel/UCzhbX…  But if you don't feel like watching the full thing you at least have to check out the Escher-inspired chase scene, it's absolutely amazing!  www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HR4Ju…

I love the song "more than this" from that movie, though I admit that I have not seen it for real

That was actually from one of the re-releases when they added in more Disney-style music.  That said, I've never heard it, i should look it up!

I've never heard of this. But sure seems interesting- especially with such a gorgeous piece of art like this as incentive.

Thank you! Hardly anyone, at least where I live, has heard of this movie
My favorites are Zig Zag, The Grand Vizer and the The Thief ^_^
The backgrounds are one of my favorite things about it

I absolutely agree! It's has an irreplicable charm. I first learned about the Thief and the Cobbler a few years back and its tragic story; it's one of the reasons why I like Disney a little less than everyone else. >_>

I loved finding out that that William's original inspiration for the film came partly from Sufism and co-wrote some folktales of Mulla Nasrudin with a fellow name Idries Shah, but there were some issues about ownership by the Shah family, so Williams had to let the idea go and thus came up with The Thief and the Cobbler. It was such a long process for him, and he was so close to getting it done! Regardless, in its Recobbled Cut form, It's still one of my favorite animations. C:

I think I actually know what this is. I never watched it as a kid but a few years back I might have seen part of it, and I have to admit it didn't leave much of an impression. Maybe I ought to watch it again and see what I make of it this time.

It's pretty weird and has a definite retro feel, but you should really check it out again.  The Recobbled version on YouTube is the one you should watch if you've only seen the edited versions, it is the most complete story and doesn't have the lame dubbed voiceover.

I never saw it as a kid but I remember seeing the trailer at the beginning of a VHS (I can't remember which VHS it was now though).  I only saw the full version as an adult a few years ago.

Sadly, the original version was never completed and apparently the Recobbled Cut is still technically complete since some of the footage is not finished. Wasn't the Recobbled Cut made by animators that worked on the movie? It's too bad that Disney never had the original version finished back when they owned Miramax.

I think Garrett Gilchrist who has done the Recobbled Cut is just a fan, but I do know he was able to get in touch and obtain footage from some of the original artists...which is a pretty big feat!
