Description
"...There might have been a timeWhen I would give myself away
Oh once upon a time
I didn't give a damn
But now, here we are
So whataya want from me
Whataya want from me?
Just don't give up
I'm workin' it out
Please don't give in
I won't let you down
It messed me up, need a second to breathe
Just keep coming around
Hey, whataya want from me
Whataya want from me
Whataya want from me?...
...There might have been a time
When I would let you slip away
I wouldn't even try but I think
You could save my life!
Just don't give up
I'm workin' it out
Please don't give in
I won't let you down
It messed me up, need a second to breathe
Just keep coming around
Hey, whataya want from me
Whataya want from me
Whataya want from me?..."
-from Whataya Want From Me by Adam Lambert
For one of my best friends, DJ, and his beloved real life German Shepherd, Dakota, who is starting to show some age in not so good ways. I wanted to do something for him, but there are some things that just have no easy fix, and sometimes all you can do is share sympathy and hope. So here's a picture of feral DJ nuzzling his adopted daughter and probably promising her he'll do whatever he can to help her and see that she comes through everything alright.
This is a smallish piece done on toned parchment, around 6 x 8 inches. Did it today after one internet service was disconnected and the other wasn't connected because of some stupid ass scheduling error. Well, finally got my iPhone to agree to be a hotspot so I can get online and get some commission details saved to this damn laptop so I can work, but I figured I'd go ahead and upload this while I was at it since I finished it today amidst the frustration of screaming at Cox Cable representatives. Sheesh. Anyway, done with colored pencils. Yay!

Thank you so much! Β When I get done with my current queue over on FurAffinity, I'll be opening up for new commissions, and I'll try to open some slots over here as well.

On this particular piece I didn't blend the pencils because I wanted some of the tinted parchment to show through. Β So whatever blending you see is achieved through layering and varying pressure. Β Thanks so much!

This is another picture that I ran across on your FA page and I cant help to admit that it did bring back both some fond..and not so fond memories. I think that this is a feeling that a lot of people know all too well, the passing of a beloved friend/family member. In particular this reminds me of my old dog, who was pretty much my best friend, who sadly passed away several years ago from old age. None the less this picture reminds me opf the good times that he and I had together, and the hurt from having to let go.. isnt it always 'too soon'? Still this picture, is just beautiful, from that heartbreaking look on DJ face, I can almost hear his words trying to reach to her, telling her that everything is going to be ok, but more so perhaps trying to convince himself of the same. I also admire the soft and almost understanding look on Dakota's face, how she seems to trying to be strong for the both of them. It doesnt help too much that I work for a veterinarian and this is a sight that I happen to see very often from owners when 'that time' comes around.
Β
Honestly, I wanted to type so much more about this picture and how lovely and moving it is, but it seems as tho the more I look at it the more that its making my own eyes water up from memories long ago. Still, I hope that in some way this picture was comforting to him and im sure that him knowing the two of them are in your thoughts was something quite meaningful on its own.

I think that DJ has always known that his baby girl has been his quiet and ever present strength. Β DJ is a good, tough, strong man, but this is something that definitely brings him to his knees...as it should. Β Dakota is a good dog though, she's going to continue to life her life as well as possible. Β Dogs just never seem to give up.
Thanks so much!

Oh, the emotions here! I like how Dakota has this look of peace/tragic acceptance and DJ's angry at life/fate. Kudos!

Dakota seems like such a sweet girl.Β Just like a good dog should be.Β She'd rather harbor whatever is ailing her privately and keep on truckin' than bother her master with her pain.Β DJ...well, if DJ can't fix something, he's at loose ends...so something like this is certainly his kryptonite.

Aww, how sweet. <3 I wish your friend and his puppy the best of luck. Watching our babies age is horrible. I love the details, the emotion and the colors on this. I love Dakota's sweet face and the determination and strong stance of feral DJ. Love it.

Dakota is a gorgeous puppahdog, and it is sad that we have to watch our canine friends go downhill as they do as they age. Dogs deserve longer lives dammit. So far though, Dakota seems to be responding well to the new treatment DJ and her new vet have her on, so that's good. Thanks as always, girlie!

Indeed, very true. I hated seeing my four dogs age in the past. Losing them was so hard on me, especially meadowlark, since she was only 8 years old when lymphoma finally took her. That dog fought a whole YEAR with it just to stay with me when 4 vets told me shed only stick with it for a few weeks to a few months. She was definitely a fighting collie. Id give anything for dogs to live half as long as humans. Such short times to stay with us and make our lives whole.
And im so happy to hear that! I wasnt a BIG fan of shepherds until we got Leto (even though I half had a GSD years back, he was suppose to be my bros, but I ended up taking care of him, urgh), and just fell in love with how intelligent and responsive they are. I continue to wish her and her owner, your friend the best of luck. I know how it goes to fight like that. You are always welcomed. <3

I'm sorry to hear that about Meadow.Β She was such a gorgeous babbu.Β I hate it when babbus have to die.Β I'm going to need to be tranquilized when my chinchilla of ten years dies.Β Ya'll are gunna haft to sedate the hell outta me.
I loooooove sheppies.Β I think I'll probably always want a GSD mix at my side.Β I love Ammy, and I love Schala, but Strife is my dog, and it's obvious.
