Description
In the 16th century the Ottoman empire sieged Vienna and were defeated by the pan european army gathered in Vienna. The symbol of the Pyhrn region is a cross standing upon a halfmoon, turned upside down, symbolizing "the victory of Christianity over Islam". I found this statue in Windishgarsten, a small alp town also known as a local capitol of the krampus tradition (alt.Schladming) ([link] )
I thin his statue symbolizes virgin Marie standing on a halfmoon. And in the background the cross over the halfmoon is visible. I just think it's interesting to find symbols like this as traces from history, and to translate them into a modern context
