Description Darth Vader showing a rarely seen somber moment of grief as he pauses to mourn the loss of the troops that he lost in the destruction of the 1st Deathstar.

This is a piece I did to premier at the Cape Girardeau Comic Con in Cape Girardeau Missouri. It is an homage of sorts to both Lee Teter's "Vietnam Reflections" [link] and to Star Wars.

I wanted to do a Star Wars piece that would stand out from the crowd a bit, so I thought a more somber and emotional piece would be a great contrast to the usual action works that you see. Written in Aurabesh on the memorial wall are the names of family, friends, and loved ones that I and some of my closest friends have lost.

What I like about your pic is that no one thinks about how many lives an military victory might cost. The Deathstar might have been a battlestation that could annihilate worlds but... like an (modern) aircraft carrier sunken by the enemy it was the workplace for hundreds of thousands if not millions. Millions of soldiers(!), people with dreams, hopes and a family. That's why warfare better be automated in the future and, lets hope it won't happen ever until the universe itself dies, a battlestation like the deathstar needs to be fully automated.

This is really good, a memorial to the crews and men lost in the Death Star explosion- there really ought to be fanfics like that, and in that trajectory, and fanvids as well, especially on youtube for instance, or other online video cites.

Oh plz Darth Vader is a weak, lil child-man. How can people not see that he chose in his weakness to side with evil with eyes quite open outta desperation of his love. But when he thought she had betrayed him for even a moment, he attacked her, leaving her in despair and literally ending her life in grief. He is his own author of all his grief and suffering. And proceeds in inflicting his own self-revolting anger upon the rest of the Galaxy in a child-like refusal to accept it. He's disgusting. This portrait of him grieving for the nameless Stormtroopers is BS, should at very least be Clone War troopers, only in that script does he show any form of heroism.

This's brilliant: a veteran morning the loss of his comrades in arms!
I think there really ought to be far more of this kind of Star Wars fanart. both literary and also in terms of pictures too; I hope you set a trend, Sir!
Sincerely your fan thanks in a good part to this, and hopefully one of many fans;

According to my mom (who is the biggest Star Wars nerd I know), this is actually pretty accurate. You see, Anakin didn't treat his clones like clones, he treated them like people. Darth Vader still had a bit of Anakin in him.Β

Lol the Stormtrooper next to the pilot is holding out his hand almost like he's trying to tell Vader: "You have failed us for the last time"

Although I'm not completely sure. Probably soundproof glass or something

this might've meant a little more if it had been a storm trooper doing this rather than Vader, I understand that Vader was respected by the soldiers as he was a soldier himself but it doesn't fit his character to outwardly express longing for anyone, closest he comes to love before turning back to the light is cutting off his sons hand to show him the power of the dark side.

I find this to have a very profound message. Like Darth Vader is remorseful for his part in the death of other fallen soldiers. Like he wishes he had never participated in the War at all. It shows compassion, sympathy and regret. Also honor for those that have died.Β

Vader Doesn't feel Compassion and Sympathy, he doesn't mourn death around him he embraces it, the entire philosphy of Vader is a belief he can control death. he doesn't fear it nor does he fear it for the nobodies he cares about, this image might've meant something it was an actual trooper because there was indeed a brotherhood among storm troopers, Vader felt no such thing though.

You have to look at it from a different perspective than what you are used to. Just because it's Darth Vader that doesn't mean that his character is confined to the represented personality perimeters based on the Film. This is another mode of conveying a message. I comprehend the body language of Vader. He is by no means standing there excited about the fallen. This artwork portrays peace after remorse. Not further fighting or triumph.

I'm not basing it on just the films, i'm basing it on the comics and everything else that portrays Vader, he isn't that kind of character and pretending like he is, is just misrepresentation, the picture doesn't work in it's current state and that's the end of it, also I have no idea what to make from the remainder of the last half of your comment but I'll just assume you don't understand what i'm actually talking about and leave it at that.
Seriously though this is image doesn't do a good job representing the thing it's actually supposed to.

do you even starwars, at that point in the film Vader had broken away from the dark side via the love of his son and the rediscovery of family.
this picture would've had so much more meaning and made so much more sense if this was the helmetless vader.

If you're saying that it would make much more sense if it was the opposite of what it is right now. If you are, then I agree. Because, the storm troopers was supposed to be the ones who still respect or looked up for Darth Vader. But, it should if the title was about the 2nd Deathstar.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

wetblue123 In reply to TheHaloFlamer02 [2017-11-18 19:40:28 +0000 UTC]

what i'm saying is a storm trooper showing remorse for his fellow storm troopers would make sense, but I like that as well, Vader doesn't express emotions like that and i'm fairly certain his character is also entirely incapable of even feeling them, but yeah, it should've been about the second death star in reverse, with a group of troopers looking onto the reflection of vader. an Unmasked Vader also might've worked to a degree since that was the point when he ceased to be darth vader.

I DO appreciate the different approach to Vader... maybe totally ooc, but why shouldn't his empathy towards his own flesh & blood expand to the men under his command/under his responsibility?

On second thought it might be not so absolutely ooc, as long as someones willing to leave the- seemingly- save embrace of well-established boundaries between what's considered absolutely good and irredeemably evil... something GL might've had in mind while writing the script...?

One light side note to the overall sombreness: the lil' message droid almost seems to try comforting the dark Lord by physical closeness... like a house pet or the like

Now to the controversy the whole tableau evoked in here: perhaps it WAS a little bit too soon after memorial day, so that many's feelings were therefore hurt is hardly surprising. Other, more harsh remarks seem to indicate to customs being held absolutely dear without tolerating even the slightest disrespect... kinda like a deep-rooted belief beyond discussion... unfortunately, that cannot be helped
At the least any controversy in here would- may it become as nasty & spiteful as it might- definitely not result in killing the artist for his/her sacrilege like it DID happen lately often enough...
