Story: 1038 words
Baylen was grumbling to himself as he wiped the rain off his face again. Even with an umbrella the rain was relentless and he was still getting wet. Kaleigh had accompanied him to this show since no horse and rider ever went on their own. "So did you study the map?", Kayleigh asked Baylen. Baylen nodded and took the papers out of the bag he had put them in and showed Kayleigh the parts he figured they could go faster and parts they would need to watch. Kayleigh raised an eyebrow at his commentary "That's all well and good, but you are forgetting one important thing.... The wetlands. Do you even know what those are?", she asked, her Irish accent asked. "Err we don't have those were I came from so....", Baylen said. "Well if you want to come out alive, I'd stick to the path. Wetlands have a high potential to carry bogs and such. Please tell me you know what a bog is", Kayleigh asked. "Uh.. No.", Baylen said rather nervously. Kaleigh's attitude was like that of a teacher scolding a reckless child. "A bog is like a sinkhole, once you are in it you can't get out by yourself. It sucks you down and could drown both you and the horse. So stay on the path", she said and flipped her hair behind her as she turned and went over to talk to some of the other men present at the event. Baylen walked over to where the bay stallion was stalled. The horse hadn't been overly happy but he'd perked up in the training session. Baylen gave him a pat on the side of his neck and the horse snorted and lowered his head. His eyes were for someone else. Not him. Atom tolerated him and Kayleigh but he wasn't happy under either of them. So Baylen had decided to make it his mission to gain the stallions trust at least. Even if the horse would never love and respond to him like he did to his previous rider. Baylen led the bay stallion out of his stall and cross tied him. He started grooming the stud and slightly massaging him as well. Atom relaxed considerably under Baylen's touch.

After an hour Baylen brought out the stallion's tack. Atom pranced and snorted as he saw his tack. Baylen had the stallion tacked up in good time. Leading the horse over to the barn door he didn't feel like going out to the rain just yet. Kayleigh was nowhere to be found, probably flirting with some overly cocky stable rider. But she wasn't. She soon made her presence known when she brought him his number and the vest he had to wear. "Thanks", Baylen said as he put on the brght orange vest that the competitors were asked to wear on this murky day. "Safety in brightness eh Bay?", said Kaleigh with a laugh as she made her way to the finish post. She grabbed an umbrella and stood quietly in her raincoat and boots as the horses ran off to the course. Each horse started 5 minutes after the other to ensure there were no collissions on the trail. 15 minutes later she saw Baylen and Atom approach the starting line. As the starting shot sounded Atom took off like the ex-racehorse he was. He thundered down to the first log jump and leaped it with some effort as the muddy trail caused the stallion to slide as he landed. Baylen was working hard to slow down the stubborn animal. Atom snorted and picked himself up. Going at a slightly slower pace the stallion was soon lost in the woods and only the jump judges could see what was happening out there on the trail. It made Kayleigh nervous waiting for each competitor to make their way back up from the wetlands and to the finish.

Baylen was doing his best to hold the stallion. Atom had run over lots of wet tracks but not as much so when they were hilly. Granted his last outdoor show had also been through the rain as well, they'd been told by his rider of that time, Misty. Baylen was nervous that Atom would slip and fall. He was a valuable stud horse after all. Baylen cursed as wet branches slapped him in the face and as water drizzled down his neck and back from the overlying branches. Approaching a water jump, he saw the small wooden ducks floating in the water. The jump was small, not long enough for a horse to end up in thankfully. That would have made the ground after the jump a disaster waiting to happen. Baylen almost closed his eyes as Atom leaped over the jump. The horse had a powerful leap and cleared the jump with ease. Going down a small dip in the path and back up again, Baylen realized the trees were starting to thin out. Soon the forest gave way to the wetlands. Remembering what Kayleigh had said to him, he made sure to keep the stallion in the middle of the path. Splashing through puddles and mud, they soon made their way to another log jump. With another massive leap, the stallion slid down the path as it sloped downward. "Jeez we need goats instead", Baylen joked to himself to hide the nerves he was starting to feel. Oh how glad he would be to be done this course, he thought as a wallop of mud got him on the cheek. Shaking his head he raised a hand off the reins to clear out his face. "Come on boy, five more jumps, this is the homestretch, lets get out of this cursed mud", Baylen said and gave Atom a pat and urged the horse on to the next fence. The horse surged forward, Baylen could feel the power in his haunches. No wonder he'd been an amazing racehorse in his time. He was still a great horse. Anyone riding him could feel the willingness and competiviness that lived inside the large bay stallion. Atom neighed loudly as they approached the final jump. He was looking for someone to be there at the end of his ride.
