20 degrees. Slightly overcast. Horses everywhere. What more could you want? Sarah climbed up onto her stallions back to begin a hopefully successful warmup. After a fun run at the Jacaranda Jamboree Finley had been getting more and more excited each outing. This caused some small worries from Sarah and the CSS team at the unpredictability of the stallion’s excitement level. However, he has not acted completely out of control yet.

“You’ll be fine, just go charge at people for a bit,” Marcus joked, not at all settling his sisters’ nerves.

“Yeah, well maybe I’ll get you to ride him at our next event, see how that goes,” Sarah just rolled her eyes, she appreciated his attempt to lighten the mood but now was not a good time. More and more overseas competitors kept flooding into the warmup arena. These guys were good. With an impatient stamp of a hoof Finley took it upon himself to kick the team warm up into gear.

“Let’s get this show on the road then,” Sarah muttered under her breath and urged the stallion on.

After a quick and thankfully uneventful warm up, the team headed down to the main arena gate to wait for the next few pairs finishing their rounds. Nausea swirled in Sarah's gut, was she going to throw up? She hadn’t competed with this much competition since … ever! This list kept growing with names of serious competition, people she knew that had competed at Olympics and would wipe the floor with her and Finley. But they had to try. So, when her name was announced she rode on in. Not that she could do much about it. Finley was going to have his say one way or another. Whether she helped him, or he made it up himself. The chestnut wouldn’t be held back much longer so Sarah gave him his head and maneuvered them into a prime position for the first jump. Clear. A sigh of relief. Except now she couldn’t see a stride to the second jump. Panicking she tensed slightly, urging her steed to slow a little. He didn’t, and took matters into his own, somewhat capable, hooves. Half a stride short. With the sound of Finley’s hoof nicking the top rail her stomach sank. A rail down on the second jump? They had no chance. Keep calm and carry on. Finley wasn’t slowing down anytime soon and with eyes on the third jump Sarah had to take back the reins. Clear. The rest of the round? Clear. Just that one silly pole.

Exiting the arena felt heavy, knowing she let the team down. Let her anxiety get in the way. But Finley felt good, that was the main thing. He was as keen and eager as ever. Ready for round two.

“Hey, you guys looked so good!” Marcus caught up with the pair to debrief.

“Would have been better if I hadn’t screwed up so badly on the second jump. Would have been nice to keep the pole up, but Finley did well.” Sarah sighed, admitting her defeat. It was only a horse show.

“What pole?” her brother gave her a confused look, “Every one of those jumps stayed up Sarah. Get out of your head.”

“They what?” She swung down to snatch her phone from Marcus’ hands going straight to check on the live leaderboard updates. “I didn’t have it down!”

Marcus could only smile, she got too far into her head sometimes. She needed to stop worrying and over thinking every little move. They were back in the game.
