Description
Gordon Bennett! I've gone and made Ole Blightey all doolally! You probably reckon I'm some right cheeky twat to come up with this damp squib of a map, but before you lose the plot, start bullocking me, and tell me to naff off, just read the inscription 'round the frame, you old bean, and Bob's your uncle.Β This isn't some cock up fit to be printed on a bog roll. I've just wangled the islands a bit to fit the story, see. It might seem a bit barmy at first, but when you take a good look, I'm hoping you'll bimble away chuffed. This map is based on the setting of the Rifts RPG from Palladium Books, specifically World Book 3: England. This is available as a print in this year's Christmas surprise packages . I've also posted a version showing just the bare geography .
I built the terrain from a manipulation of a real-world height map I found on Pinterest . I also re-created some common Celtic braid patterns that I found on a Google Images search. Special thanks to Arsheesh . I used variations on his tutorials to create many of the elements of this map, including the icons, curved labels, and frame.
Palladium Books owns the rights to the Rifts RPG and setting.
All right, then? What do you think? Smashing? Rubbish? Brilliant? Pants? No, no, of the map, not this writing, you giddy kipper!

Hi, and thanks for the feedback! The perimeter text on the frame is meant to give you something of an introduction to the setting for people who are unfamiliar, as well as to evoke some of the themes associated with this particular part of the setting. The Rifts RPG is something of a kitchen sink sci-fi setting where almost anything can show up and interact, from dragons to superheroes to cyborgs.
P.A. stands for Post-Apocalyptic, and it's the calendar used in-game that starts at a somewhat arbitrary date a few centuries after a major cataclysm known as The Coming of the Rifts.
Gordon Bennet is a slang expression of shock in the United Kingdom analogous to the contemporary WTF acronym and may invoke either James Gordon Bennett Jr's colorful reputation (he apparently once peed into a fireplace and/or grand piano in full view of a dinner party)Β or Henry Gordon Bennett's decision to abandon his command and fled Singapore while they surrendered to the Japanese. The opening passage is a collection of British-isms that I put together for fun.
Thanks again for a great comment! Have a llama.

Very nice work but why call it 'Post-Apocalyptic'? Why not just Arthurian or Fantasy?
You nearly gave me a panic-attack when I saw the title! Β

Will-Erwin In reply to HisPurpleness [2016-11-03 04:46:52 +0000 UTC]
Well, the setting is a post-apocalyptic future; the text I put around the frame is meant to explain that, and there are both obvious and subtle changes to the sizes and shapes of the islands. Even though this particular corner of the setting is low in technology and high in magic, this is also a world with cyborgs, ray guns, giant robots, and psychics. Camelot here is a strange parody of the Arthurian legend in which many of the key players are evil alien entities possessing animated corpses in an elaborate con job.
No need to panic yet! It'll take a bit more than Brexit to do this.

Well then, given your family history, would you please explain how the 150-point-auto-win ball in Quidditch isn't a complete game wrecker? That sport just makes no sense.

DemigodseaMeg16 In reply to Will-Erwin [2016-11-04 18:39:03 +0000 UTC]
Well you see when the games were first invented the snitch ment the game was over. No matter what. But you see it's golden color made people think it was worth points. Rumors of a grand prize inside the snitch began to spread around and all the bleaters and chasers and keepers tried getting. No seekers yet. So the founder of Quidditch formed the added rule of 150 points auto game OVER , not a win ( Bulgaria vs Ireland match) and made a new post, The seeker. THATS how if you catch the snitch, 150 points and the game is over rule was formedΒ

Will-Erwin In reply to DemigodseaMeg16 [2016-11-04 19:16:13 +0000 UTC]
Whoever added the 150-point snitch rule must have been high on Cornish Pixie dust at the time. Bulgaria vs Ireland was a blowout, and it was the only game in the books in which the snitch-snatcher doesn't also win the game.
It's like having a regular basketball game whilst in center court two players engage in a game of one-on-one match of tetherball, and when one player gets the ball to totally wrap around the other, the basketball game is over and the tetherball winner gets 40 points for his team. Unless the game is a blowout (and has time to develop into a blowout), the only players that matter are the two tetherball players. Absent a massively one-sided blowout, everyone else is just scenery to keep the crowd from falling asleep.
The snitch makes Quidditch a terrible, terrible game that seems to exist so that the world can revolve around Harry Potter, because apparently being The Chosen One isn't enough.
*whew* Please excuse the rant. I just finished reading those books to my kids, and we're most of the way through the movies, and I had to get that off my chest. I love the books (and most of the movies), but the snitch makes that sport utter garbage.

Oh yeah, I have four of them. They like maps, too; my son has been asking me about teaching him some of my tricks. If you look in my gallery, you'll find a couple of tables I made a year ago for them, which they use to build and play with their Legos.

Yep, they all love Harry Potter. We held off on showing them the movies until after we'd read all seven books to them, so yeah, we kind of thrust our kids into that fandom, too. Next on my list is the Lord of the Rings.

Dowth, Newgrange (not Grange) and Knowth are marked to far apart and are to far from Tara. It also doesn't make clear who the hostile and friendly nations are hostile or friendly towards.

Will-Erwin In reply to Abigtreehugger [2016-11-02 19:12:21 +0000 UTC]
You're entirely correct on all counts. I placed these to correspond with their story-based descriptions in the setting; several of these locations are described as being 30 miles away from any other settlement. My apologist explanation is that these locations have either been moved by supernatural forces, or that people are misidentifying these locations. I chose "Grange" over "Newgrange" at a time when I was worried that I'd have enough space for these labels. As it turned out, the contraction was unnecessary. I'll add that to my list of tweaks to make.

I really like the concept of labeling areas as friendly or hostile - great design element.
In addition, the ley lines look great and were immediately identifiable as ley lines without having to even look at the Legend/Key.
VeryΒ nice job!

Yes it's pretty nice, besides all the super mutant attacks and the raids from the raiders and the institute kidnapping the queen and replacing her with an android it's all well and dandy! Now all I gotta do is use my fat man to clear my lawn from all those feral ghouls as I water my plants.
