This is a third in a series of maps derived from reap photos of celestial objects. With a little processing, the image becomes the height map that defines the terrain. In this case, the source is an image of a purple nebula, which is available here . You can look at the two previous maps in this series here and here .

Many nebulae have well-structured, sharply-defined cloudy areas which lend themselves well to becoming a height map. The problem with nebulae is that they often have darker interior regions, which either lead to lots of flat areas from my erosion program, or require me to do some land sculpting. I chose to do some sculpting, and I redefined the largest flat areasΒ  to become part of a large central lake.

I've been refining my algorithm for this technique. From start to finish, this map took about an hour. With my new machine, I could probably do it in 30 minutes.

The top part of the image is free to use for whatever purpose you desire. I do not own the rights to the picture on the bottom; it's provided purely for comparison purposes.

Ahhh right I said sth. about it once, well done XD
Next u could do the Plejaden maybe?

Will-Erwin In reply to Arminius1871 [2015-08-16 17:45:40 +0000 UTC]

I could, but that wouldn't be high on my list of choices. This technique tends to work best for cloudy objects with some visual complexity to them. Plejaden seems to mostly be a cluster of stars.

Ahhh ok, there is an awesome nebula called "Thors helmet" what about that?

Yeah, that one would probably work well. I'm working on a video tutorial of this technique now. Once I finish and post it, you should give it a try!

You may have to wait a while; my laptop's graphics/video card died while I was editing this morning, and my efforts to reinstall the driver and restore to a previous version have failed. It might be time to get a new machine. $$$ ouch.

Oh dear, I also had some issues, but resetting helped me out a lot.
But I still wait for a breakthrough in pc technology making it worthy to
buy a new one XD Cause my 6 year old one can still handle every game
in HD quality.

I tried resetting, re-installing drivers (in normal and safe mode), and some other steps. The hardware is shot. I don't begrudge it; I've had this laptop for almost six years as well, and it's been a good machine. I can now buy an across-the-board upgrade for a couple hundred less than I spent last time. I'll get a new machine; just gotta do some bargain hunting now.

I'll see if I can put something worthwhile together. I don't have much experience with video software, so it may take me a while.
