I've illustrated this before, but since then got new info online about the skeletal proportions: it seems to have had a comparatively shorter back and longer legs than I gave it earlier. So here's version 2. Rusingoryx (named for Rusinga island in the Kenyan part of Lake Victoria where the first ones were found, and for resembling an Oryx or gemsbok) was a member of the long-faced antelopes, the Alcelaphines, and within the group perhaps closest to the modern wildebeests. But it looked very different! Its swollen 'forehead' was actually a nose, with nasal passages lengthened and looping back above the eyes, and also huge sinuses. The scientists puzzling this thing out, think these inflated nasal chambers would have amplified and deepened their bellowing or trumpeting calls. These nasal passages are very similar to those of some of the hadrosaurian dinosaurs, such as Corythosaurus, Hypacrosaurus and Lambeosaurus, in which the nasal passages infiltrated their spectacular bony crests. Rusingoryx lived between about 75 000 and 55 000 years ago. They were fast runners living in herds on open, grassy plains. There are signs that early humans hunted and ate them.
