Description Another creature from my 'Wavendreem's Garden' story world.  Struvabolgos are descendants of birds that some day very long ago flew into a cave and then stumbled upon the vast subterranean realm.  There is a highly complex ecology down below.  The energy that powers the ecosystems comes from magical crystals, and huge mushrooms that can feed on nutrients even inside the rocks.  Struvabolgos don't eat the mushrooms themselves, but have filters in their bills that sieve fungal spores from the air as well as from the water, and they derive all their nutrition from those.  In time Struvabolgos have grown much larger than their original ancestors.  Evolution in my fantasy world does some strange things, and so Struvabolgos have some atavistic qualities, and a strange, unique feature: a fin-like process on their upper backs, formed by articulated extensions of their vertebrae, which they use to signal to each other.

They were indeed partly inspired by the Borogoves from Through the Looking Glass!
