Because it's acid, a hallucinatory drug that affects the Cerebral Cortex. It affects all of your senses creating vivid hallucinations, such as spiders crawling underneath your skin, the feeling of being able to fly, paranoia, and a crapton of other stuff. In fact, LSD (acid) is probably one of the main causes of death in 'Murica. This kids, is why you shouldn't do drugs. Anyway, the bright, vivid colors of this game/animation paired with the hallusinations would just cause their brains to freak out. Therefore, intensifying the hallucinations, and causing them to completely freak out. Maybe even to the point of jumping out of a window.

It's been a while since I made this, so I can't remember exactly. But I was simply messing around with BitmapData and adding/subtracting values from other nearby pixels, along with some added randomness.

Haha, good way to describe it. This is programming in Acrionscript 3 for Flash. I just manually maniuplated the data to give these kind of effects.
