Description
Odin's horse has eight legs and is called Sleipnir. He's also Loki's son. The trickster god turned into a mare to distract the stallion of a giant who was rebuilding the wall around Asgard and who would have recieved the sun, the moon and Freya if he met his deadline. He was so angry at seeing his horse leave him to run after the mare that he started tearing down the wall. Thor smashed him on the head. Loki gave birth to Sleipnir and handed him over to Odin, 'cos a horse with eight legs MUST be twice as fast as a horse with only four."Sleipnir" means smooth or gliding (think "slippery").
Eight-legged horses rock.

Very nice. It could as well be drawn on the shield of a Viking, not on Deviantart

In norwegian, Sleip would mean slippery or a person who is tricky(in a negative way ). Maybe it's a reference to Loki. As he is a trickster god
Nice picture ^^

This is amazing!!! How did you draw/make him? I'd love to learn! I'd love a horse with 8 legs- Imagine the look on people's faces if you turned up at a showjumping comp riding Sleipnir....

I think for this one I used an oekaki program, actually. The rest is all drawing skills, there's no shortcut.

I knew a bit about Sleipnir, but not the whole myth of how he was born. Thanks for posting it along with your deviation, which is awesome, by the way. The Celtic knotwork is a cool way of portraying the 8 legs.

serpentine, to be more precise. It's not a very hard stone (around two or three on hardness scale, I think?)
I'll try wood next time, I guess!

this is really cool...I love how smoothly the lines of the legs turned out, and the colors are very nice. Great piece.

Haha, wow! I was looking at the picture and counted 10, then looked again and counted 8. It's really confusing.
Anyway, I like the simplicity of this and the smooth lines. Good job!

There really are eight legs. Vikings have such COOL stuff in their legends!
And thanks. Simplicity is what I was going for!

I love the concept and portrayal of Sleipnir in this ^_^ It's simple but nicely-done in a graphical way. Btw, long time no see, windblade! Thanks for the comment on my Vinnie fan art.

Heh, I know I did a few mistakes (Sleipnir is supposed to be gray, I think...), but it was too cool a concept to pass up. I'll try making a Sleipnir pendant in serpentine sometime.
And yeah, we haven't talked in a loooong time.

It's actual norse mythology. I'll never be crazy/tired/stoned/all of the above enough to make things like this up.
