A late Christmas gift for =SageGoat ! For a while she's been urging me to paint a Lammergeier, and I've always meant to. Finally I got off my butt and did it!
Lammergeiers (also known as Bearded Vultures) are amazing birds. They pick up bones and drop them onto stones to smash them open. This sounds easier than it actually is, and it it takes years for birds to perfect this technique! They break them open to get the nummy marrow inside, and will also eat bone shards. Their stomachs, with a pH of around 1, dissolve the bones in about a day! Watercolor on cold-press Fabriano, 8 X 10 inches

I really like these birds with their bearded beaks and striking red around the eye and rather wide and seemingly mischievously-smiling mouth! And this is a beautiful painting of one! I love the teensy bit of warm purple in the shadows and the facial fluff looks so flowy and natural. You always draw such mind-bogglingly good feathers to, haha! xD
