Description ---DISCLAIMER-DISCLAIMER-DISCLAIMER---
I do not claim to understand dinosaur anatomy/feather patterns/anything dinosaur related. I did a small amount of research on Velociraptor mongoliensis which I used as a looooooooose base for the dino to the left. I know there are a ton of errors with it and I am aware of that, but this was not meant to be a scientific illustration. If I get a flood of comments telling me what I did wrong I will simply point you up to this disclaimer I know a lot of people out there are serious about their dinos.

Well! That out of the way, this was a small drawing I did for postcards for the raptor center to send out! This year's theme for libraries is "Dig into Reading," so naturally we got the idea to show where raptors came from, through what we discovered through archeological digs! Birds are modern day dinosaurs, isn't that awesome? Ever wanted to have a pet dinosaur? You can!

Various hardnesses of graphite on Bristol vellum paper, ~8X12 inches.

Ive always found this image, the "from dino to bird" thing, rather amusing. It has no basis in reality, as the individual dinosaurs shown are almost never actually related. That said, it certainly looks very nice.

I will admit I didn't do a lot of research on specific species when drawing this, and the 'in between' creature is one I made up (loosely inspired by several dinosaur species).  Mostly I wanted to illustrate the evolutionary link between dinosaur and modern-day bird, even if the illustrative link itself isn't scientifically accurate

In that sense, it certainly works.

Though I should note that no winged dinosaurs actually had claws on the wings.

They do not have claws ON the wings, as shown here, rather, the feathers grow on top of the claws, like in modern birds today, though you would still be able to see them.

I'm very serious about my dinos, but I still think this is well done. What a great concept!

Well then we do have a pet dinosaur, of course she is a parrot rather than a raptor but she will still bite anyone other than my brother, lol.

Also, this is a much prettier progression than the ones usually shown for mankind. Given the intellect of corvids, such as corvus corax (ravens), it seems that the dinosaurs are catching up to the mammals that supposedly surpassed them. I look forward to perhaps one day meeting a corvus sapiens when it eventually evolves... if only I could live to see that.

It is an excellent concept, I love the way it all ties together, and it get's the point across about knowledge (I guess, because dinosaur part of are brains remain widely uninformed and as we gain knowledge through books and learning and what not we evolve into something that can soar) I'd really want a poster for this at some point because I am in the process of becoming an Earth Science teacher on the high school level, and I think it would be cool to hang in my class room. Great Job!

haha, i think it's silly when people think that. i've always loved dinos, and when i first heard about the feather thing, birds just seemed so much more awesome.
