The savannahs and jungles of Efrika are rife with danger, from wild animals and hostile tribes, to criminals and poachers, to Dr. Robotnik and his robot armies. Some of these places are too remote or dangerous for normal authorities to access or deal with, so many towns and cities enlist the aid of bounty hunters to help keep the peace. In Efrika, the most well-known of these groups is the Engine Corps, a gang of bikers, mechanics, and motor vehicle enthusiasts led by Axel the Water Buffalo, and armed by the group's weaponer: Piper the Zebra.

Originally born to one of the hunter-gatherer Mobian tribes of the Savannah Citadel, Piper became fascinated by modern Mobian society and left home so she could learn more. In particular, she developed an interest in holograms, laser-induced plasma, and hard light technology, and began working to become a holo-technician (or Lightsmith, as some called them). Unfortunately, the rest of her people didn't share her fascination and attempted to steer her back on "the right path", fearing she would be "corrupted" by civilization and its "black magic". When attempts to reason with her failed, they resorted to violence, eventually, whipping, branding, and exiling her. Traumatized and abandoned, Piper was left completely alone in the savannah, a death sentence for a zebra like her. She wandered aimlessly for what felt like years, living off whatever she could get her hands on, until Dirk the Rhino of the Engine Corps found her and took her into the Engine Corps.

Since then, Piper has become one of the Corps' best engineers, designing and building most of their new Holo-Weapons. She's also become a fierce bounty hunter, willing to risk life and limb for her guild, especially Dirk and his family. She's especially attached to Dirk's foster daughters by marriage, Clove and Cassia the Pronghorns, having become the former's girlfriend. Unfortunately, her long solitude and love for her new "herd" have made her violently overprotective of them, often making her come off as mentally unstable.

Much like the patterns of her fur, Piper is a Mobian of extremes. Her emotions and views tend to be black or white, one thing or the other. When she's happy, she's bouncing off the walls with excitement. When she's sad, she falls into depression or bawls like a baby. And when she gets angry, she's quick to make threats and resort to violence. You're either her friend and support her, or you're an enemy and against her, and once she makes up her mind, it's hard to change it. As an enemy, Piper is a terror on the battlefield and a force to be reckoned with. But as an ally, she's one of the nicest, most caring and affectionate people you'll ever meet.

*Piper is named after the genus of plants pepper vines belong to. Her name also contains the word pipe, a type of car part; fitting for her connection to Axel and the Pronghorns.
*Piper holds the honor of being one of the first OCs I've had drawn to appear in Tales of Sonic the Hedgehog.
