Description
An average human in the western world consumes about 5 grams of plastic every week, according to WWF studies.
That is about as much as a credit card. Plastic is not only contained in fish or other sea food, but also in food and drinks that are packed in plastic, such as water in plastic bottles or oven-ready meals. Fat, heat or long storage times make the plastic transition into our meals and into our bodies. It is also contained in many cosmetics, such as shampoo, lotion, makeup, toothpaste and many more.
Plastic is assumed to cause infertility, vitamin deficiency, cancer and anatomical birth deformations (because that's some of the effects it has on laboratory mice; this kind of thing cannot be tested on humans for ethical reasons, which is why these effects are not confirmed, but likely).
It has become almost impossible to avoid plastic. It is in our clothes, shoes, floors, tableware, toys ... the list goes on and on. From those things, microscopic pieces of that plastic gather in our homes and in the air you breath. In your lungs. In your blood.
And because it is everywhere, it is also in this piece of art.
Should we worry?
Yes.
Should we panic?
No.
It is entirely up to us to reduce the plastic around us. We are one ones who bring plastic to our homes and we're the ones who can keep it out. Even if politicians and companies don't help us do so.
What can you do?
Avoid plastic. In every form. If it's packed in plastic, don't buy it.
If it's made of plastic, don't buy it.
If it contains plastic in any form ... don't buy it.
Or at least, buy less of it. Re-use things. Look for alternatives.
It's our time to save this world.
Let's be heroes.

You've really been getting good with water! It somehow looks very shimmery, even without all those little particles.

" If it's packed in plastic, don't buy it."
It's probably our biggest problem here, plastic is so cheap that most shop only offer stuff packed in plastic...
I buy drinks in glass bottles whenever possible (I don't drink alcohol at all and finding glass bottles of water is impossible here and rather rare for Coke), otherwise in cans (though cans have been said to bring cancers, other health issues and infertility just as much as plastic) but the prices twice as much as a plastic bottle containing twice more Litres. I can do it know as I have a job, but when unemployed I couldn't afford such luxury. And drinking tap water either in France or in the UK is seriously disgusting as it's full of limescale, and cheaper water filter are made of plastic :/
I know in the Netherlands they have a small shop with 0 plastic and prices incredibly high, I wish more shops would follow the idea so they can lower their prices eventually.
Then you've got these hypocrites like Burger King in the UK claiming they want to remove all plastic toys from their kids meals, but they only have plastic straws and sauces in plastics pack rather than small carton containers like they have at MacDonalds.
Speaking of straws, the other day in the train two women and a small girl were complaining how metal straws are deadly because of that old drunk woman who died of it, and how paper straws get soggy and "really they're just making up stories to make us spend more money". Like climate change, too many people refuse to see the threat plastic poses.
And then there's the problem of replacing these plastics with paper and carton... which kill more trees... when we're fighting against deforestation and desperatly trying to plant more tree everywhere. A good for a bad, a bad for a good, which one to chose?
Then there's also the people who keep saying plastic has been there for eons and no one ever suffer from it, even less than tobacco, so why the big deal now? More stories to feed our brain in order to make us spend more money on non-plastic stuff which are more expensive. Photos of sea animals with plastic bags killing them? All Photoshoped.
(this is not me saying it, it's what I hear or read everyday)
That being said I'm all for avoiding plastic as much as possible whenever/however I can. It's just so difficult in the modern society of today in our countries where everything is about money and so few people actually caring about the environment
